Battery or phone?

Hi folks, the following has been happening pretty frequently over the past while. The battery gets to 1% then to 0%, the phone switches itself off, I attach it to the charger, it says 1% again, I turn it on still attached to the charger and as soon as I unlock it the battery seems to be over 45%.

Is it the battery that is on its way out, the phone (Xiaomi MiA3, bought in 2019, IIRC), or something else?

    Thanks.

Possibly both - they have finite lives. Might be worth trying a new battery first. But depending on cost, could be better investing in a new phone?
