How long do you need to be out of Ireland before you can change domicile?

It's not a question of how long since you left Ireland; it's a question of what is there to show that you have permanently settled in another country. You can be out of Ireland for 50 years and still retain a domicile here because, e.g., you still retain a home here, own property here, have social and business links here, visit frequently. On the other hand, you might have left only a few months ago but have retained no property here, bought a home in your new country, married a spouse there, put your children into school there, established a business there and bought yourself a grave-plot there.

In general, it takes a considerable time to change your domicile, not because any particular length of time is required, but because in the ordinary course of life it take time to build up the kind of connections with, and links with, a new country and society to add up to enough to demonstrate a commitment to remain there permanently.
