Insurance NCB problem

I have a Classic car policy which is now getting expensive. It does provide me with a NCB feature to maintain my no claims history. My wife is the registered owner of our main car so that she can earn NCB points in her own name (zero loss/claim history). Now most classic policies require you to have the main car registered in your name - you cannot be a named driver on this main policy and have a Classic policy. If I re register our main car into my name then wife will lose her NCB history. I am looking for a company that will provide a policy that is Fully Comp. and will accept you have the use of another car - not be the named policyholder of that car.

If anyone has such a policy I would be grateful to hear it.

Aviva allow named drivers the same NCB credits over time. They will also accept and apply the same discount to you as a new customer once you’ve been named on a policy.

I let my NCB expire from 2021-2024 and I already have a full bonus again according to my paperwork as I had been named for over 10 years on my wife’s policy.

In general if you haven't had an insurance policy for 2 years you lose your NCB.

We're a one car family so every year I take out a new policy. I alternate the main policy holder/named driver between my wife and I. This is to keep both our NCBs, in case we ever need a second car again. If you're married it doesn't matter who the registered owner is.

You'd presumably need to do it with the classic car insurance at the same time as the main car but could be worth looking in to.

In general yes, but many insurers will allow you keep the ncb if you can show you were driving regularly on another policy and have proof of no claims.

Eg driving under a company policy.

AXA and Aviva certainly permit this

I am currently with AIG for the Classic and the wife's Skoda which is a fluke not deliberate. I will check out the other two mentioend above who we have used previously since we have to change each year for some unknown reason these days. If we have to change the registered owner each two years then that is an option to get a cheaper Classic policy but I want to be sure this is the case.

    Cheers for the feedback

If you're married, you don't have to change ownership. Both of you has an insurable interest in your spouse's car, and so can get a policy on it without it being registered to you.
