Is it possible to convert a GFCH system (communal tank) to a OFCH system (private tank)?

From an engineering perspective yes but what does the paperwork say about the GFCH contract and will an oil tank be permitted.

What's the thinking behind the ?

All of that will have to be investigated beforehand, but my thinking is that I would prefer to be able to control the cost of buying fuel rather than depending on a central system. Now that you have confirmed it's possible my next question is the amount of work involved.

You need to provide loads more details. Is there no mains gas supply?

If there is a shared gas tank feeding individual gas boilers for each dwelling does each dwelling have its own gas meter?

What is layout of dwelling as in do you have a garden where an oil tank could go? Is it a multi storey apartment block? Where is gas boiler located compared to garden? Do you have a hot water tank?

Typically oil is more expensive than mains gas but gas prices recently have risen. SEAI have a good fuel price comparison page to give a general idea of costs to run.

    Lets be clear here

I said From an engineering perspective yes, it still may be a non runner from a legal perspective.

In any event suppose its a runner and it will cost say 5,000 euro

assume 5 cent per kWh saving vs the gas, thats 100,000 kWh you have to burn before you break even

If you use 5,000 kWh per winter , thats 20 years at which point boiler may need replacing

Thanks for all the replies, this is the type of info I'm looking for. This is a house I'm thinking of buying so just doing a bit of homework.
