BMW Battery Replacement - Main Dealer or Anyone Competent?

I have a 182 X2 and recently I was getting a warning that the battery was discharging when stationary. I had meant to get it looked at but as usual I kept forgetting. Friday morning the battery was dead in the driveway. I got the AA out and it started 1st go on the jump leads but he said it would probably require a new battery.

He mentioned going to the main dealer to get the battery programmed to the car. Is this vital? I know going to a main dealer is going to be much more expensive that going to a battery replacement garage. Do I need to take the hit this time?

Also, I have a 3 year BMW dealer waranty, would this be covered by the waranty?

BMW dealer approved used car warranty is usually 2 years not 3 but makes no difference here as a battery is considered a wear and tear component like a bulb or tyre so not covered.

You don't have to buy the battery from a main dealer but it does have to be coded to the car otherwise it will not charge correctly which will shorten it's lifespan. Any independent garage that works on BMWs regularly and has the correct BMW software can supply and code a new battery for you.

I’m nearly certain even Halfords can code the battery to the car. Might be worth checking with them if its handy for you.

When you say discharge when stationary but it sounds more like a discharge in the car draining the battery rather than a faulty battery.

As far as AA goes there used to be a set procedure for flat batterys ,connect boost pack (not leads).check for drain, startcar, check charging rate, run for 15 minutes & test battery. They could supply & fit a battery (if they had the right one on board). They all had equipment to programme batteries.

    Where are you based?

Probably someone not too far from you could have bimmerlink/bimmercode.

With these apps it seems you can code on the batteries.

Never done it myself but I have the apps and I'm based between Westmeath/meath if you need.

    They have the equipment alright.
Anecdotally they have been known to skip the coding stage altogether though.

Do you have a Dashcam installed?

I get that warning, even though the dashcam is set to turn off at I think 12.2 (I think) volts so as not to drain the battery too far. The BMW warning system is quite sensitive to be fair.
