Riello RDB 2.2 oil burner won't start

Hi all, I have a Grant boiler, only about 3 years old, which has a riello burner - RDB 2.2 which won't start. Have already replaced the oil pump as it appeared to have a sticky pump and when given a few taps of the hammer, it would normally kick into life. So replaced the pump and it worked fine for nearly a week and now will not kick in at all. It makes the initial humming sound and then the elctrodes can be heard but it then locks out. Have checked the fan on the other side and all looks clear there - as in not blocked up etc. Is it likley to be the motor itself ? The fan wasn't very free rotating - wouldn't spin a few turns for example - is that normal? How can i check if its the control box, or the capacitor either ?

    Thanks in advance.

Very soon for an oil pump to fail. There may be water or sludge at the bottom of your tank which is contaminating the oil supply to the burner and damaging the pump.

Fan should be relatively free, try taking off the new oil pump and see is this what is restricting it. If there is water in the incoming supply line it will damage the pump quite quickly.

In case you are not aware, the pressure needs to be set on the new pump using a pressure gauge and really you need a flue gas analyser to set it up correctly.

If its just making a humming sound then could be the capicator, I don't think the fan should just spin freely but should be relatively easy to turn, if you havn't a M.meter with capacitor testing, then just buy a new capacitor and try that, I had a Minor1 burner on a Grant boiler many years ago and it was a PINTA, every few weeks without fail when it locked out and then started buzzing on restart I would have to kick start it by flicking the fan with a screwdriver, I never found the real cause.

Had a similar problem in my last house. Had to have water drained from tank. Plumber advised buying some water detection paste from plumbing provider for keeping a check on water. You can monitor your tank by applying paste at a couple of levels towards the bottom of the measuring stick when dipping. It will show the level of any water and how close it is to outlet feed pipe. Help to prevent destroying your pump again.
