Felt should be painted with solar reflective paint to protect it from sun damage - it's basically aluminium paint.

Thanks for the reply. Any suggestions on how to prepare the surface prior to painting? Thanks

Just scrape off anything that's loose or flaking & wipe off any remaining dust etc. with cloth

    Ok. Thanks for that. 🙏

l think that roof is made from lead ,, l could be wrong though .

scrape off the loose paint ,, looks like the old paint was black masonry paint

It may well be. But same recommendation as Monsieur? To use aluminium paint? Thanks

If its lead which now its been mentioned it certainly looks like you don't really need to do anything. In fact I'd say its better not to do anything. Lead is easy to paint and the right paint sticks well to it but it doesn't stay stuck as the lead oxidizes and also moves leaving the finish you have. Not sure its relevant now but patination oil is the traditional finish for lead like that.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I doubt it's lead, looks more like torch on felt. The flashing is definitely lead and it seems that the felt was painted some time ago with a black coating and the lower part of the flashing was painted in the process.

Ok. So if it's torch on felt I'm just looking to improve it's appearance. So would it still be to scrap any loose bits away and clean with cloth then paint with aluminium paint? Ideally in black again I imagine. Thanks...

If its felt get the worst flakes off then give it a coat of a black bitumen paint, it covers everything.
