WWYD - worth it to fix or cut my losses

Have a mitsi outlander 2015 120k kilometres. Not cost me anything untoward since I bought it except regular servicing etc. Has an issue and garage says could cost 4-5k to fix! Still driving. Looks like the max I would get on a trade in is 8K (thats for a car with no issues I didn't say anything about them yet as was just seeing what car would be worth as a trade in). Was hoping to keep for a few more years didn't factor in having to change in finances. Need a 4WD auto so looking at 30K upwards to get something under 100,000 kms.

would you fix and hope its ok for a few more years or cut your losses?

I spent $$ fixing a previous car only for it to have issue after issue and it was a money pit.

I had a similar problem and I put that 5 grand into it only for it to fail an NCT afterwards with a hidden oil leak at the back of the engine.

I've moved on to Electric and I do not have to look under the car now for oil leaks or listen for strange sounds or change belts or oil anymore and it's a bit of a relief - yes, i know EV's have their own issues but to each their own.

I drove EV for 10 years and won't go back in a hurry, once the novelty wears off it gets boring and all the charging at public charging becomes intolerable, I can't the hrs I will never get back…..

Anyway, what is the issue costing 4-5 K with the Outlander ? the missus has a 2015 and the ECU died in it a couple of years ago, cost around 2K to get fixed, cheaper than a new car.

A couple of months ago she got the slave cylinder replaced, big job, gearbox had to come out so changed the clutch at the same time. She's happy enough, still a lot cheaper than buying newer cars and interest all that bs not worth it.

Buy new EV to save what ? you're not going to save, then when trade in time comes……….. no new car will save money and I won't be buying any new car again because it's insane the amount of tax the government get for free of my hard earned, f1ck that. no more !

The Outlander has if I remember correctly around 120,000 miles, it should last another 20 years given the mileage she does these days.

not considering an EV as need something to tow now and again. Also not entirely sure of the issue have to get back to mechanic today, just showing dbf warning. I think I will get a 2nd opinion. 4-5k is madness. Not looking at buying a new car at all just a replacement for this one, 4WD auto required, 2L engine minimum. So big chunk of change even if getting a 6 year old!

You’ll have to get it coded out for €400 if you don’t want to spend €4000 on it

    Are we talking the DPF ? I assume that was a typo ? 4 K , I'd expect a 2nd hand engine installed for that !

Keep the outlander , they have a very good engine that will last forever !

    If I remember correctly, wasn't that 2.2 Diesel a German engine ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭v0ldeMort

yes exactly my thoughts, new engine wouldn't be much more. whatever seal has to be taken off/put back on again is 13 hours labour each way so 26 hrs labour before anything is fixed.

its a 2.3 diesel. Was hoping to keep if for a few years yet and run it into the ground basically.

bringing it to an ex mitsubishi garage for a 2nd opinion before I make any decisions, but can't get in till end of next week,

Yeah labour and all aside, can't see where it would cost this, is this an indi ? a lot of places can price work so high because they don't want to do it or they are too busy.

yes Indy - beginning to think that you are right. Was a great place to go for servicing but they couldn't see the car for 4 weeks and now tell me this. If only they told me this weeks ago would have saved me being without a car for so long.

You need to be more specific as to the issue.

I had my (once) regular mechanic tell me that my injectors were gone, well.. at least 2 of them (600 each) and I'd be looking at a bill of 2-4 GRAND to sort out. He diagnosed by… driving it. I - myself - plugged it in to VW VCDS and injectors were fine for first 15 mins then faulty.

Why? A faulty 100 euro wiring loom! That a local (to me) 'old school' mechanic diagnosed over Xmas when I was desperate.

Second opinion on whatever the issue is. Start there.

Is it a new DPF you need?
