Hi. I'm in LC and thinking about doing Criminology in UCC next year. Can anyone give and feedback on course content/difficulty and the job prospects out of it? Any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks

My niece and my friends daughter were looking at it in Maynooth and Dublin respectively. Yes it looks like a wonderful interesting course. However when you do deeper research and delve deeper down, there are not that many jobs in it after research. For the same amount of effort if you are interested in "criminals" you would be financially better off doing law and after a few years with some free time on your hands add on a psychology degree. Dont worry about criminals, they pop up just like mushroom.

I remember talking to someone once on the UCC course, they said it was amazing they had someone from the Army Ranger Wing in to talk to them about Stockholm syndrome. Your future will have a lot of paperwork and statistical reports and what not. Where do you see yourself long term? Prison service/Probation office? I met a prison officer about a month ago when he said in his prison they increased the capacity from 750 to 950 (approx) by adding an extra bunk into the cell. The prison system is well overflowing, well past breaking point. There will have to be massive investment in infrastructure. Watch what is going on in the UK and see if you want to be part of that.
