I had a good few TB reactors this year, and was thinking of spending some of the money on solar panels as it can all go against farm income this year.

Are you eligible for TAMS grant?Is your wiring in the yard certified?Have you a suitable south facing roof?Find out your consumption as that will determine the size of the system.

I'm thinking you are going to see a lot more fluctuation in time of day pricing.

The number of solar panels and private solar panels feeding back is going to keep prices under control during the day with peak morning and evening times costing a premium.

If you have for example 7 - 10k to invest then panels are good option as they reduce your electricity costs & track inflation in doing

Thats not factoring in selling back to the grid

Take a long time to pay back 10k if you're selling back to the grid at 10-14c per unit

No two situations the same regards payback time e.g some people use majority of their electricity during day, some people solely rely on electricity for heat, energy etc.

Between the savings from using solar instead of grid and then selling back to grid its a no brainer. I got panels before FIT. FIT is a bonus

You will always have a esb connection to your house with solar anyway meaning all standing charges levies + vat have to be paid so even though your electricity units used will be less .....

VAT is not a standing charge. For every purchased kW you replace, you reduce your VAT.

Feed in tarrif..... The amount electric companys pay you for any electric sold back to the grid

I think I read somewhere when Panels were added to TAMS, that the FIT for panels installed via TAMS would be 10-14c. Now that may have all changed since cos if it is still the case then it is not motivating to get them through TAMs, when a domestic house via the SEAI grant can get FIT at between 19-24c, its a big difference and makes it feel like another way to kick the farmer!

But agreed, it is a bit of a no brainer, I have panels in just over 12 months now and have only paid about 100e of a bill (last spring) due to not having any FIT credits built up before heading into last winter. Just over 5Mwatts generated since installation. Am 300e in credit going into this winter and then the 2 top up payments from the Budget to be added on as well.

My experience of solar….. I installed a 16 panel system on south facing roof on my house which went active on 2/11/23. Cost after receipt of grant was €8,000. I have air to water heating the house, no oil, no gas, no solid fuel, all cooking & heating is electric. In the aprox 50 weeks the system is in operation, it has generated 5,750 units of electricity, I have used just over 3,000 of these units and sold 2,750 units to the grid. My feed in tarrif is 20c/unit. In the 50 weeks I have used a total of 6,750 units of electricity, so for a stand alone house, we are relatively high users.

The money earned from selling the electricity and the savings I have made by using my own electricity and not buying off the grid has amounted to €1,460 in the 50 weeks according to my electricity app, so on target for €1,500 for the year. My last electricity bill was showing €290 in credit and I expect my next bill due late November will be covered also. The last time I paid an electricity bill was last May, so no energy bill for 6 months of the year.

At this rate the system will have paid for itself in just over 5 years. The system has a 25 year warranty and an expected lifespan of 40 years, no maintenance. I had the €8,000 in the bank, so in 12 months it has saved me €1,500, how much would I have earned in interest if I had left it there, €15?

For me it's absolutely a no brainer….
