New door fitted, should it be airtight?

Had a composite door fitted a few months ago with all the bells and whistles like 3 point locking and triple glazing etc.

    Included the surrounding frame.

With the recent cold winds I was able to test the door for the first time and noticed a definite chill coming from the door and in fact I can feel cold coming in at the opening when my face is a couple of inches away. There's also audible whistling.

The door was fully closed and locked.

Its not enough wind to blow paper but it would be enough to lower the room temperature.

Is this normal for doors and am I expected to fit draught excluders or does it need a refit/update?

Doesn't sound right, I was under the impression they were A rated to keep heat in.

Doors like that have adjustable cams and receivers and they often need adjustment after install. Contact the installer and they should be able to rectify the situation with a house-call. It should only take 10 or 15 mins.

    Are good seals fitted?

Possibly as i also see that the lock is a bit tighter to close so it might be rubbing and needs adjustment

Then it has shifted and needs realignment anyway. You can do it yourself… but if it's only there a few months then the company should rectify it.

If you have a spirit level check that the door and frames are straight and plumb. UPVC door frames are fairly easily bent if forced.

Either way think there should be a no fee call out as door is so new

    It's composite

Don't go adjusting it yourself, get them back. Mine was the same, got them back, it's good now.

I got a composite door fitted badly and it had to be pulled out and replaced with a new one which was also installed badly, ended up just having to accept it as we were sick of the sight of them. I have to adjust the receivers and cams every few months to keep it as tight closing as possible. Proper **** show

Have heard recently that the Palladio range of doors which you would find in lots of houses here whilst they claimed to be A rated that they were anything but. Lot of th sé companies advertise to be a rated but that is just the thermal rating of glass in the door and not the overall door energy rating.

Yep that sounds right, pointless the door being a rated if it's installed by idiots anyway

Aye it's a Palladio alright...pretty sure the warranty states it's the door itself that's rated. That would be false advertising then.

Hey op, did you get the installers to fix this issue? If so, is it airtight now?

I also just got installed a pelladio door, triple glazed etc but noticed some parts of the opening, you can feel some breeze. The guys re adjusted it but can still feel it albeit less. Guys said they can't do much more so not great.

how is this company still in business? I hear nothing but bad stories both online and off

They adjusted the locking cams and it's quite a lot better, though some small sections have a marginal cold coming in, but it's about an 80% improvement.

I guess I can adjust it a bit more if I need.

One downside of the locking cam adjustment is that the door handle locking is really tight to move now… but at least it's less cold.

Just adjust the cam on the door handle a gee hair till it losens enough for you

Does it matter if the cams are different depths on different points on the door? Won't it cause warping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

I presume the frame is fitted slightly warped so your basically warping the door to suit the frame if that makes sense. It's shocking to have to do it on a new expensive door but that's exactly what I have to do
