Looking for a new used Laptop that's light and compact

I've been using a Dell vostro 1520 since 2012. Happy with it apart from the weight. I'd like something that I could bring around more easily. That's pretty much the only factor that I have in mind. Maybe something with slightly smaller dimensions too in order to make it more compact. I'm used to Windows operating system.

Looking to buy second hand of course. I don't care how old it is, but I'm assuming it would have to be somewhat modern in order to achieve the light weight factor. How much would I have to spend?

I don't have MS on my current laptop but I presume it's not possible to buy one of these things with MS already on it. Thanks

This are generally bought as job lots from large corporations that replace their IT on a fixed cycle. If your lucky some of these have never been used.

No, it's a business in Drumcondra. Mine is 'refurbished' and pristine. I suspect that the screen wasn't even opened for the most or almost all of it's life. I've bought off him twice, that's my only relationship with him.

Some of the best deals can be had from Germany refurbers on Ebay. You have to be careful about keyboards though as they can be from different language zones.

Not being smart but how would you explain that to a 10 year old? What's a job lot? So the corporation has an IT centre that is replaced by the job lot??!! As I currently imagine it, IT deal with problems that occur with a product after it is built and sold. So I'm trying to think of a job lot replacing IT and it's making my head hurt.

It really simple. Big firms buy in bulk for their IT departments to distribute to workers. Laptops are drawn from this pool as needed. They have a service life of typically two years, after which they are all pulled and replaced. These pulled laptops are sold on at minimal price to certified refurbers who wipe them and sell them on. This typically means anything bought from a bulk reseller will be between zero and two years of in service use.

No, all of the IT engineers need functional and fully supported laptops. Their internal IT team then decide to replace the laptops on a 3 or 4 year cycle as it keeps the install-base relatively similar and eliminates a lot of the issues with older OS/ applications/ functionality. That means that some laptops are excessively used (and scrapped) while others are underused and worth money on the second-hand market. It's just how IT operate.

In Ireland the market is much smaller, the margins much bigger but costs of operation are much higher so it doesn't surprise me that they would.

None of the big high tech operations would deal with such an refurber since data integrity is the bottom line and this takes high levels of trust - so these are second tier sources.

Personally I looked into the Irish refurbers and saw them as poor value for money, but would have little worries about their products

I think that is a low percentage to be honest. I hear it's more in the 78.6 % range. Don't hold me to it, though.

I have used greenIT for used computers. Have been very impressed with their after sales service. They are a fairly big organisation and I'd say that corporations sell directly to them.

Apart from being a customer I have no connection to them.
