I've been trawling DD and adverts for a really cheap bike (like 200 quid) to go to school (work) on. It's only 2k but it's surprising the toll it takes on a good bike to do 2k twice a day in all weathers.

Has anyone an old cheaper than chips (functioning!) road bike or hybrid or even mtb that will reliably potter a 2km commute and ideally take mudguards?

Have a look at this thread. I put the Claud Butler up for 200 quid, got exactly no interest.

If it's a bike that would work for you, feel free to pm me with an offer of what it's worth to you.

I work in Naas during the week, and the bike is currently in work.

I just finished building up a new bike for my son so his old commuter is going a begging. It's in rather a sorry state but could scrub up nicely. It's a Vitus Stag alu with carbon forks and will take 32 tyres and full mudguards. Size is 52 in a compact so is possibly a smidge too big for you (it's exactly the same as "LARGE" Planet X Pro Carbon from 2010 or so if you want to look it up on geometrygeeks). It's fitted with 5600 105 (10s) and (good quality!) Tektro long drop brakes (105 didn't reach). It'd need a new BB and cranks, chain, seatpost and saddle, wheels but you might have all those?

I also have the very same frame (different forks) for sale on Adverts -

Built up as a hybrid here.

I have a touring bike lurking in the bowels of my shed somewhere. It was used as a commuter/everything else bike. It has a steel frame and V-Brakes.

Thanks All for taking the time to reply. I've an option here locally to me I'm gonna check out.

    What's the touring bike Trekker09?

And what d'ye think of this one? Shed ornament or proper bike?

Picked up a local Yokel. 150 euro worth of Lapierre French magnificence. It's quite mad in a world of 700 euro rear derailleurs that you can pick up an entire, functioning bike with wheels, tyres, bars, brakes, bar tape, three chainrings and a cassette etc etc etc for the price of set of tyres for a "good" bike.

Anyway, thread can be closed please.
