There is a stench of Bullshit over the cost breakdown of the security hut.

Security shelter at Government Buildings cost €1.4m, says OPW (irishexaminer.com)

He said the security shelter had followed “an extensive” security review by gardaí and others.

“There was a huge element to that project,” he said adding that there is “far more to that project than meets the eye”.

So the Gardai were asked whether a security hut was needed and they said yes?

Cost breakdown on €1.4m Government Buildings security hut revealed – The Irish Times

"With total building and site costs coming in at €393,325" - You could build a 3 bedroom house for that. They hardly had to dig out a foundation.

"Mechanical, electrical and security costs came to €558,118" - It's not an air traffic control tower. A few screens and cameras?

"€150,282 for security systems and a further €143,376 for physical security features such as ramps, anti-ram devices and turnstiles. A temporary security hut cost €190,169, while design fees were €121,219."

I hope we don't need many more security huts!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

An extensive review by the Gardai would not have cost anything, so starting there for the excuses is poorly thought out.

They hardly had to dig out a foundation.

They would have had to dig a foundation, just a much smaller one than for a 3-bed semi.

"Mechanical, electrical and security costs came to €558,118" - It's not an air traffic control tower. A few screens and cameras?

This is where the real smoke and mirrors starts. I did the kit out for a Security Operations Centre for a bank a few years ago.

In the words of John Hammond from Jurassic Park "We spared no expense". The bill for that came to about 60k.

Mechanical, electrical and security costs… 150k for security systems and 140k for physical security features.

I work in security and yes add the word security to something and it makes it more expensive, but those numbers are still taking the piss.

This thing's going to have to be dug up because of issues with drainage and stagnant water.…

    https://www.thejournal.ie/securtiy-hut-government-buildings-drainage-6810631-Sep2025

A spokeswoman said: “Following investigations by the OPW and the contractor appointed … the cause of the odours has been identified as water remaining in the drainage lines, which was becoming stagnant.

“A proposed solution has been agreed.”

The pavement and granite around the security pavilion have been marked off with work expected to begin by the end of September.

    You forgot something

However, they insisted there would be no further bills for the taxpayer from the project.

No, they will just add extra on to the next OPW project.

For the crazy price of that security hut, the OPW would have built four cycle shelters.
