I've been offered this thru a main dealer for €5k - 115000km, seems to be in good nick and will come with 3, maybe 6 months warranty.

starter car for my kids as we have 1 electric and hoping to get a second.

seems to be a very good price - what do ye think?

and is there anything i should check for?

Doesn’t sound right. Why is a main dealer giving you it for €5k? Are you sure it comes with warranty? Its a €10k car from a main dealer

It's not a 10k car, 5k is more than enough. All that car would be in a dealers yard is a liability. Nobody wants them…..

Cheapest on carsireland is €8k - most of them are asking between €10k and €12k. Asking €5k something sounds suspicious.

Either way whether its a €5k car or a €12k car its still a Peugeot - and not one of the good ones if such a thing exists.

The 208 was second last in reliability in whatcars tests - says it all really. I wouldnt touch one if if it was 5,000 cheaper than the rest for sale.

Have they not got the eco boost engine?

    Wet belt?

    If so run

I've seen them for sale for 5k, and less….. I take no notice of what people advertise them for. They are worthless….

speaking from personal experience ref wet belt system

Paid e1100 recently to change my kids Evo boost timing belts

    Main dealer wanted near e2000

AFAIK some Peugeot and a lot of Fords have the same engine/ wet belt system

The internet is choked with sob stories about same.

Hope I'm wrong, but id get it checked anyways,

A client recently had one and Peugeot wanted near 4 k to sort hers out.

But the OP says its a main dealer - somethings out of the ordinary. A main dealer offering one of these at way below asking and giving warranty with it?

    Doesnt sound right.

BTW -Im with you they are a **** heap.

The 12-19 208 1ltr engine is a chain driven unit, I think it's also in some of the smaller Peugeot/Citroen and Toyota's. The 1.2 Puretech is the Wet belt engine. The first generation 1ltr 3 cylinder engine is as troublesome as the one that came after it.

Regardless of your opinion they are still a €10k car if purchased from a main dealer so something isn’t adding up if OP is being offered one for €5k

I sold a 2014 one a while ago for a couple of grand but it needed a new engine.

They are not a 10k car, I wouldn't have one on my forecourt, never mind for that sort of money.

I seen a 181 208 sold out of a dealers at the beginning of this year for just over 6k with warranty…. It was back 3 times in 2 months for repairs, the 3rd time the engine let go and it was thrown back and money returned….. It's still sitting in the dealers back yard going green with the grass growing up through it.

thanks for the feedback everyone - we had already decided to pass based on insurance costs but this feedback only cements the decision.

as for the garage, it's a renault dealer who took it in as a tradein and is keen to sell it on - i was getting it at cost as a loyal customer for the last 14 years with them. I trust the dealer, they would have given me 6 months warranty on it too.

You made the right move there…. A clean well serviced up to 2012 Fiesta 1.25 would be a good starter car, insurance is not too hard on them.

    1.25 are fine

It's the bloody eco boost one Litre needs avoided big time

Yeah they are chain driven, bit of disaster of an engine because the chains stretch.
