Hi has anybody any experience of owning the later model Dacia Duster 1.5 Diesel ? There are still some new left on sale in Ireland , last of the turbo diesel models . How reliable are the 2023/24 models? Are they an improvement on earlier versions . Anybody with first hand experience of them?

Don't know much about those cars but the Renault 1.5Dci is a solid engine.

They're much better in terms of rustproofing since they moved production from India to Romania back in 2014. That was the main issue with early ones.

It’s worth remembering that this model came out in 14 years ago as a budget model, it had a heavy facelift in 2017 and every body panel was changed but it’s still basically the same car - so by todays standards it’s a bit of a dinosaur.

If you are happy enough with all that then they’re actually a good car. The new model is much better but not available in diesel.

If you don't value your life it's the ideal car

Probably the Euro NCAP score for the vehicle.

I am not familiar with the specifics but a lot of the time the lowest rated cars in this have are missing lots of electronic warning systems etc but aren't necessarily "Dangerous" - just missing a number of features that would add cost to the car, but not necessarily enhance their actual safety.

Is that new car feel really something you care about if it's a Dacia you're buying. Just buy a used one. Let someone else pay the depreciation.

Yep that's exactly it. It's missing the electronic aids. In fairness anyone I know who utlises alot of the "auto aids" are idiotic drivers who put all their faith intk those systems

It was not a facelift in 2017. It was a brand new car but yes it the mk 2 that is still basically uses the same platform as the mk 1 gen.

The new one is the mk 3 Generation.

It's also unlikely to burst into flames like some more prestige makes. ...

With the new one imminent just make sure you are getting a great deal on the old model. The 1.5 is a bombproof engine, nothing to worry about there.

    I put 100K km's on a 212 duster.

Cons - seats are very poor, lots of hard plastic, replacing bulbs every year, window washers freeze very easily.

Pro's - no engine faults to date, 5.0l/100km's, reasonably high driving position, reasonable ground clearance.

It's not bad and it's not good. Cruise control would be badly needed if motorway driving. if your planning on driving more than 25K km's a year you might want something more comfortable.

I actually find the seats very comfortable! Mines a 2015. My OH has a 2016 3 Series and prefers to drive the Dacia if a longer drive as she just finds it more comfortable. I know seats are personal choices as depends on your own height, shape etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 317 ✭✭Vittu

Exactly, I am on the taller side and find the duster to be cramped over all. Had a 3 series and agree the seats could be harsh on longer journeys. Always heard French cars were meant to have comfortable seats.

Are Dacia Dusters not basically re-badged Renault Captiva/Nissan Dukes in very plain looking clothes with a bit of the comfort and safety kit taken out? similar to what Volkswagen did with various Seat & Skoda models.

Bulletproof engine and a great car if you aren't looking for fancy gadgets. My brother has one and it's done 230k klms with no issues

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭djan

I'd strongly suggest waiting for the new model. A completely new car and well worth the relatively small jump in cost. The current model will depreciate like a brick.

I'm on my 2nd Dacia Duster. First one was 2017, 2nd one is 2019 (192). I absolutely love them. Had 2 Renault Meganes before them. The 2019 Dacia I have now is great, a big update on the 2017, love the automatic door unlocking . Only 66K km on clock but I'm in Kerry so putting up a fair bit since I bought it a year ago. Can't fault it.

Yep nail on the head, NCAP was very unfair to Dacia and what I found a real disgrace is that they didn't even test the Jogger, no they just gave it a rating based on the Sandero , really disgracefully misleading the public !

Who needs all the electronic annoyances that are supposed to make cars safer ? all they do is bing and bong, my previous car, a VW id3 tour 5 electric car had the adaptive cruise, travel assist etc and I didn't realise how bad adaptive cruise actually is, it scared the crap out of me several times on the N7 because it won't prevent a rear end collision, laws of physics, if the car in front stops too hard you will rear end and no electronic gadgets will save you.

Travel assist was handy but this could encourage a lot of people to text or browse the web, social media, so in reality electronics in cars has made worse drivers not better, we need proper and better driver training and better ways to detect people on phones or playing with the infotainment browsing spotify playlists or pod casts, it's really gone insane, cars are meant to get people from A to B.

Anyway, I sat in the jogger and newer Dacia and I liked them and their simplicity the only thing I wish they did was have a proper display and controls for the radio.

If Dacia had kept making LPG cars I would have bought one but they didn't probably because the LPG market in the U.K fell on it's ass and they were probably not bothered making Right hand drive LPG cars.

Went to look at one of these today, a 2021 1.5 Diesel , while a nice car to drive, I noticed a whining from the back when the engine is running, it goes off within a few seconds when the engine stops,

I mentioned this to the sales man , and he said all the diesel's do that, and the petrol ones are ok?

Does anyone that has one have this noise, either from puel pump or adblue pump and if so , have you sorted it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I don’t know about the whining but that Renault dieselengine is usually bullet proof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭techie

I know, I have a 1.5 Diesel Kadjar 17, and was looking at this, but that noise would put me off them?

I test drove 2 of them, both same spec and noise was there in both, so looks to be a common issue, can see online others are having same issue, but Dacia don't seem to address it, can't understand it though, as cars are both up for 23k???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

No not denying there is a noise just curious to hear it that's all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭techie

The sales man will be ringing me tomorrow with prices on my trade-in, so will ask him about it, if he says its normal, then no Duster for me, as could not put up with that sound, even turning up the radio :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,164 ✭✭✭Luna84

Has to be the fuel pump? What else could it be if it's in the back and goes off when engines turned off.

They all do that, it's nothing to worry about. It's just a pump, you don't even hear it after a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Kevhog1988

My father crashed one of these last year. Came around a bend and met a car on the wrong side of the road. he went for the hedge to avoid them and the car rolled numerous times. Air bags never deployed even though the car was absolutely wrecked!!. One of the most frightening things was the wishbone on them is tubular and snapped in half. I dont think ive ever seen a tubular wishbone on anything…

The person in the other car never stopped btw… left him with the car upside down.

    Must dig out the photos

As said likely the fuel pump. Prob would be less noticable if it was full of diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭techie

One of the Duster's I test drove which had the noise, was 3/4 full of diesel?

Would be interested to hear from any Duster diesel owners here, surely this noise is not normal?

I've a diesel and no pump noises or anything. Rattly engine noise, but no different to other diesels of the same kin

I had a 2024 petrol step way as a replacement car last week, it was a petrol engine.

I found it generally unpleasant to drive and very noisy inside too. When started for a new car it sounded very rough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭techie

Wow, my wife has this exact car, a 2024 TCE90 Stepway and I find it quiet and quite enjoyable to drive, and it runs on a whiff of petrol too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,972 ✭✭✭patrickc

Maybe as mine was a garage car it's been driven hard?

I'm driving a 1.5 Skoda engine which is way quieter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭techie

Probably, we collected ours with 20km on it, so have it from new, and it is very good, hence me looking at the Duster

I've just bought the 2024 1.5 diesel in the Extreme package from new. Really happy with it to date. Cruise control, climate control, heated seats, lane assist, sat nav, Android auto etc and 6 speed manual gearbox.

Comes also with 3 years map updates for Europe, 3 years warranty or 100k km, 3 years roadside assistance or 100k and 6 year's corrosion warranty.

That noise which lads are talking about is apparently the fuel pump, however I have got used to it and it's not particularly irritating, in fact it's no more irritating or continues any longer than my van's cooling fan shutting down after a drive.

No complaints so far and very happy with service to date from the dealership which I bought it from.

We have that same engine in a Merc A-Class, and it does the exact same thing. More noticeable outside than outside tbh.

Other than that, the engine has been very reliable including a period of 900km/week commuting, and is very light on fuel.

We had that same engine in a Mégane Tourer previously and it was faultless in that 2 over a period of 5 years.
