Rear Bumper Bar - NCT legal requirements

Hi my second hand car I just purchased failed nct on not having a rear bumper bar in place, the bumper was fully secured with no issues.

My question is, is it considered as a structural component for the car and is it necessary for vehicle roadworthiness? I cant understand how it would fail by it not being in place.

I might add the car went through a full nct test less than 3 months previous and this was never picked up then as causing any issue?

Should I appeal it or do I have no choice but to fit one?

Did it have a hitch fitted one time and now removed? What make/model of car is it?

It protects the car/passengers from being crumpled in a rear end collision so you should definitely get it looked at. You’d get one from a scrapyard cheap enough

Don’t attempt to appeal your NCT result

    Assume you bought privately?

Not the way to go but you can wait 30 days and try again

    An appeal won't work
