Adding to micro inverter system

    Hi Lads,

Just a bit of background on this. I have 2 types of systems at home. A 3.24KW E/W on a solis string inverter. I can't fit anymore panels on the roof so can't add to that. I do have a south facing roof with 2 panels and micro-inverters. What I would like to do is add a ground mount to this with another 3 panels and micro-inverters. Youtube videos etc make this look handy enough. Is there anything I need to consider though in terms on the cabling back to the CU? I can buy the panels and inverters cheap enough but I can't justify paying someone to come in and do it.

Even the two South facing panels seem to do a lot of heavy lifting when the weather is decent compared to the 8 panels on the main inverter. If I could add another 3 panels to the south facing array that would be great. I'd even add more if it is feasible based on the system limitations etc.

Before I start, technically you'll be in breech of regs if you hook up additional micro-inverters to the grid yourself. You could do all the wiring etc yourself, and then get a registered spark to sign off on it handy enough though.

That said, there's a couple of things to be aware of. Make sure you earth everything. All the panels, mounting rails, etc, The cable going back to the CU will need to be the right spec. 2.5m^2 I reckon which is good for 25amps or so - depends a little on how where it's installed.

Ideally, I'd try an use the same make/model as your existing micro-inverters. Actually since you already have a cable going from the existing microinverters back to your CU, I'd hook them into the same feed you already have. Again being careful there that the cable can take the amps. You shoudl also ahve a way of isolating out the microinverters via an isolation switch.

I agree with what Bullit Dodger has said. Just to add, with most MI you can daisy chain them, plug and play. You could also wire a four port MI from a different brand in parallel if the connectors aren't the same. Whatever MI you get, be sure they're correct with the grid settings for Ireland applied.
