How old does a car need to be before not having to pay road tax and NCT ?

Cars that are 40 or more years old are NCT exempt. Cars that are 30 years or more old get a concessionary rate of motor tax of €56 per year. I don't believe there is any age at which they are exempted completely from motor tax.

Correct info above but adding the fact that from age 30 to 40 nct is every 2 years. Up to 30 is every year.

Note in January of the 30th year you need to contact your local tax office to get motor tax changed to low rate. It can vary by county and person you meet but in Dublin the rate is 56 from January of the 30th Year. Other areas they may not allow it until actual month of registration in Ireland or build date at factory with proof from factory. You will probably need to attend in person.
