I changed the battery on my 2016 1.5tdci ford focus and now it doesn't seem to be charging anymore.

The multimeter is showing 12.3 v when the engine is off but only shows 12.5v when engine is running, prior to new battery it was showing 14.3v when running on the old battery which only showed 11.3 v when engine off.

    Is the car functioning correctly?

I'd run it with lights and everything else on and see if that increases the charge rate. Its all smart charging systems now so you wouldn't know what it would show if battery was fully charged when installed.

Was the new battery coded in? If not it can mess with the alternator sending correct voltage.

Cars are getting stupid now as having to run diagnostics for changing the battery.

    Hi Blake594

No it wasn't coded in, it was just a straight swap out and in. How would I go about coding it in ?

    Hi mickdw

Yes everything seems to be working fine but with everything on it only increases by a couple of mili volts

You need a diagnostic machine to tell the ECU it has a new battery fitted.

Resistance has changed from the high old battery to low on the new one.

You might be able to reset the Battery Management System without a diag tool.

    https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/127684-reset-the-bms-after-a-battery-change/

This is most likely correct, unless you damaged/shorted something (doubtful), then the car may just not be charging the battery when it doesn't need to. My petrol car (not hybrid) will charge the 12V battery when I brake, and it tells me so on the dashboard (and also when it needs to of course)

For me, it's very annoying as I'm afraid to set my dashcam parking mode to cut off at too low a voltage, as I don't know whether the car is keeing the battery halfway charged to try and extend it's life (100% all the time is bad), or if my batter is just plain weak.

Are you sure the underlying reason for the demise of your original battery isn't down to a charging fault that you're now seeing?
