Taking an ebike into town

I used to be a keep cyclist & I'm considering getting an ebike in my older years. I am thinking of a folding bike so that I could take it on the bus. I live a 45 min bus ride from Galway. Can one easily take a folder on Bus Eireann ?

But more importantly where can you leave it, in Galway city, while you shop ?

Are there any folding e-bikes that are actually portable?

Unless you get a Brompton or something of similar quality, I get the impression most folding bikes fold for storage purposes rather than portability - they might be a beast to lug around public transport.

One of the problems with folding e-bikes is that they can be heavy and cumbersome once folded. My Dad got one of the lightest at 18kg (fiido D12) but it’s still awkward. He does manage to take it on the train with him however. Some of the larger folding e-bikes can be up to 30kg so it’s important to try before you buy. Some fold and have little caddy wheels etc.

As for security, make sure the bike you select can be locked up easily with a ‘closed loop’ in the frame. The Fiido does not have this, for example, I think you’re meant to bring it with you.

You mentioned that you take the bus, having seen Galway traffic is there any chance you would out run the bus on a full size ebike and just cycle in from home? I commute 20miles a day on a Bosch powered Cube bikes and it’s no sweat.

Yes in my prime but not now :)

    I noticed the weight problem.
