Would you buy this car?

Volvo XC60 2016 (one owner in IE since 2020) with no service history in IE, no proof of timing belt changed, but he said he did it, (he said that only the belt has been replaced, the WP was ok, then he said the mechanic changed the entire kit) the car is due for service, leak oil around the rocket cover (Volvo charge €700 to fix it), motor tax/NCT are both due in Nov, alarm service required, another €500 to fix it… Initially he asked 14k, dropped to 12k. I ll try to go down to 11k or 10k, or gave up.

Is there any mechanic who does a timing belt and does not write down on the engine, at least, when was done? Personally I never seen.

I do not have much experience but the engine sounds Ok.

I have never seen a cam belt cover that refuses tipex either, even if it was written on it there are no guarantees that it has been done.

You are perfectly right. I have done the timing belt kit, beside the milage written on the cam belt cover, when it was done. I also have the receipt of the timing belt kit I bought. I have every work, even a screw or a washer… I have replaced on my car, receipt, milage and date.

If someone can't be arsed keeping a receipt for the timing belt change then I always assume it was not changed. I'd also doubt any servicing was done to schedule with someone being of that mindset. Probably bare minimum spend Chinese mixed brand tyres on it too.

Assume nothing was done, it probably was but with no proof budget for doing it?

How many miles since it was imported? How much is a proper one with full history, if you buy one with a full history Volvo will rescue if you breakdown as long as you keep the service with them, I use bolands in Carlow and find them reasonable for a main dealer. Think it was about €200 service the xc90 a few months ago and now we're covered for the next year breakdown.

Yes, but this does not sound like a car that has had maintenance to speak of, it is a volvo with alarm issues and oil leaks, it is going to cost money to fix.

One of the lads here bought a "cheap" 2016 Volvo v60, it is now costing him a new Airbag control unit at €600 + vat for the part and €300 + vat for Volvo to fit and program, so there is over a grand making the cheap Volvo more expensive than a decent car to start with.

Around 40 000 km done since Jan 2020. Full service history, same km like this one, is around 17 to 20k and.

I might go below 2016, I have Vida 2014 software that is not compatible with 2016. I want to able to diagnose the car by myself.

I wouldn’t pay more than €10k for that. It needs about €2500 spent on it immediately. New timing belt & water pump, repair oil leak, full engine service, tax, NCT repairs, and whatever an alarm service is.

Assuming you've ruled out the 2nd gen XC60 based on what you're looking for, the 1st gen XC60 ran from 2008-2016 with a facelift in 2013, so personally age wouldn't matter too much for me. That 132 I posted is a facelifted one which is asking less than some older ones which is why it's decent value in my opinion.

No more remap. I did it, actually this is the way I got it, i changed three times the turbo and intercooler hoses on my V50.

AS others have said there is no evidence of the timing belt or water pump change. Any time I did a belt change I always put a water pump and tensioner in also. When doing the job you might as well as you are in there. Also any decent timing belt kit comes with a sticker or two to record the change.

No, I wouldn't.

First off, after a quick check online, it seems quite under priced.

Secondly, If there is no proof that jobs were actually done then treat them as they haven't been done.

No service history and no mileage on the timing case after changing the belt/chain rings alarm bells. Writing such info is standard practise for a mechanic. If it ain't there then the mechanic isn't very good or someone removed the figures.

Also, the seller dropping €2k off the, already low, price off their own bat also rings alarm bells.

If it was me I'd walk away.
