So a friend has just bought a new air rifle, want me to come up and help him site the scope in, as he has only ever shot shotguns. Thinking of taking my air rifle with me and staying overnight as he is a few hours from me. I know air rifle has to be kept in a cabinet which we both have, could we both use the same cabinet at his house overnight, but put our own trigger locks on the gun, therefore neither of us would technically have access to each others rifle. Or would we be breaking the law.

So there are 2 aspects to secure storage, broadly speaking:
1 - Stored securely(as in a safe or similarly standardised secure receptacle)

2 - Preventing the use/access by unauthorised persons

If you both have your firearms in a suitable safe, you have fulfilled 1, and if you both cannot access the other's firearms(by use of a trigger lock) that fulfills 2.
It is also the standard method by which a lot of folks when they and a parent both have firearms store their firearms.

Another option would be to bring a separate lockbox with your ammo and putting an essential component(without which the gun cannot function, like a bolt on a rifle) in with the ammo and locking the lockbox. So long as you have the key this also ensures no one bar yourself, the licence holder can access or use your firearm.
