I must say I was surprised how much Oregon struggled, that match up in the regular season was a cracking game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Its tough going to Texas but I think the Buckeyes will beat them.

I still think Notre Dame are the best team in it. I think they'll beat Georgia comfortably tomorrow night. Their defense is just too good and they've a nice mix on offense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Only watched the first half of the Rose Bowl, but clear at that stage what the result was. Ohio hitting form at the right time, will take beating and won't fear Texas I think. Oregon flattering to deceive, regular season and knock out gsmes are a different beast.

Interesting to me is that so far the 3 teams that had the bye last week are out. Obviously, the likes of Arizona and to a lesser extent Boise might not have been fancied anyway, but Oregon were, and it looks to me like the long break some teams had hasn't helped them. All 3 teams started slowly and struggled.

The conversation in the States now seems to be whether the four highest ranked conference champions should automatically have the 1-4 slots or merely be guaranteed qualification. I think they should let the new format bed down and have another year at least, the idea was that there should be at least an element of being able to play your way in on the field by winning your conference championship.

Leonard penalised and pretty severely with a five yard penalty and loss of down. He threw the ball, it was blocked and landed in his hands again and he ran out wide and threw it away. The penalty was for throwing a second forward pass. I never knew such a rule existed. You learn something new every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

    Yeah, never knew that either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

A big penalty now for #39 (not togged out) for Georgia standing in the linesmans way and colliding with him (accidental obstructing the linesman) I always think there are too many hangers on and others on the sidelines at these games. Potential recipe for disaster and I'm surprised there aren't more incidents.

Georgia open with a field goal and are slowly getting to the speed of the game. ND need to get a score and get going I think soon. Defence on top.

Great end to the half for ND after a fairly dull first 28 minutes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

"dull" in terms of scoring,I do like good defensive play and it's been nice and tight so far

Fantastic defensive performance from Notre Dame. This is why I believe they are going to win the national championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

They needed that score, great finish to the half. They are in a decent position now, needed to get ahead by HT I think.

It's all about the defence in this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Wow - KO return for ND now at start of 2nd half!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

    Lovely jubbly

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,212 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Some fun from ND swapping the punt group for the offence on 4th and short - Georgia rush the defence back on but give away an offside penalty resulting in an Irish first down.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,212 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    And that will be that

    Semi finals

Thursday 9th 12:30am No 7 Notre Dame v No 6 Penn State (Orange Bowl)

Friday 10th 12:30am No 8 Ohio St v No 5 Texas (Cotton Bowl Classic).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

Great job by ND defence & ST'S plus Reilly Leonard putting his body on the line😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Unfortunate that ND now get so much less recovery time than their opponents but whatever, they're deservedly in the game. I've always hated Penn State too so this should be fun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Yea fair play ND. Kinda thought Georgia might grind them down as the game wore on, but they stood up well and matched them physically. Good win. A few late nights ahead it seems....

It’s a pity they’re on so late - I’m not in a position to stay up for them and Sky/Now don’t make available a delayed/highlights package for them, though thankfully ESPN do tend to post non-geoblocked highlights on YouTube. I do get though, it’s weekdays and they need to be in prime time, and the NFL have the weekend sown up more or less.

Interesting that no conference champion made the last four, which gives more fuel to the argument that they shouldn’t be guaranteed 1-4 seeds. Texas is the last representative of the SEC remaining, but it is their first year in that conference. Georgia gone, Alabama not even making the playoffs. OSU and Penn St representing the Big 10, and then the Irish, despite not being able to be seeded any higher than 5, making it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

ESPN rightly getting raked over the coals for focusing so much on the parker Jones incident. Right at the end of the game, Sean McDonough was still whining about that one incident with a close up on the poor guy, as if that was the reason they lost and not because they were inferior in nearly every aspect of their play. Going to ruin some kids life because your beloved SEC team didn't win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

That's ridiculous, they still had a 1st and 10. They still couldn't stop Notre Dame before the end of the half and on the kick return at the start of the second half. That's where they lost the game.

Even if there was no penalty there was no guarantee they were getting a td. They got a field goal so even if they did get a TD they still lost by nine points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Well McDonough has been pretty despicable before now anyway. Same guy denigrated Indiana being in the playoffs ahead of Alabama, and repeatedly questioned the quality of the big ten in general, and even when ND won last night he managed to get a dig in on them as well. The whole ESPN/SEC things is a disgrace, but the Jones thing is just especially low for them.

Not related to this year's competition, but an interview with new Boston College kicker Andy Quinn, from Creggs on the border of Co Roscommon and Galway

    Good luck to the lad

    I know his parents well.

He played rugby and has a massive leg. Put one over from the halfway line at 16 years of age.

He comes from a great family, his parents are wonderful people.

He put a rugby ball over from half way?! Very promising

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,898 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Good for him, hopefully he will have a successful college career and maybe more.

BC are a high-ish profile Power 4 school and he'll get decent exposure playing there.

A bit like Shannahan in Georgia Tech.

He's a senior so he should have played his final game last win the loss against Vanderbilt.

It will be interesting to see if he gets picked up as an undrafted free agent (punters rarely get drafted) to try out at some training camp.

The last non-CFP bowl, the Bahamas Bowl, is on today at 4pm. Liberty v Buffalo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Jusy when you bring that up I have to say that having the Rose bowl as a qf in the playoffs is just wrong imo.

I've said many times that if I was a coach or player I'd want to win the Rose Bowl over the national championship because of it's history. It's been played for over 100 years and shouldn't be demeaned like it is now.

It's a nothing game as a part of the playoffs and that's just wrong.

The same applies to the Sugar, Sun and Orange bowls.

They should be played for by the teams ranked 13-20.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,212 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I suspect there’ll be more arguments like that when it comes for the Rose Bowl to have its turn as the semi final and it’s played out of its normal New Years Day, Californian afternoon slot, in prime time (well, teatime in California) in a work day instead.

The problem is that it’s a double edged sword in that if you’re inviting the also-rans (even if they’re say, Alabama and Michigan!) it devalues it anyway.

I did see one article that suggested that the Rose Bowl Stadium should host the national championship every year which is an interesting solution, but I can see why they’d want a NFL stadium to host that instead.

You always had teams ranked between 3 and 8 in it so I don't see how it would be devalued too much by having teams who've just missed out on the playoffs. I don't want it as a National championship semi-final either. It's always been.the Premier bowl game and just winning it is a momentous achievement for any school.

Is should always be a standalone event.

Great game going on. Penn state were on top early going 10-0 up. Right at the end of the half the Irish got a field goal and then the third quarter was all Notre Dame as they took a 17-10 lead. The key change was the Irish getting their running game working. Penn State with a great drive just now to tie it up.

Anybody's game, the Irish have to respond right now.

Oh no, Riley Leonard just picked off. Penn State get the ball at the Notre Dame 40. ☹️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Kiser intercepted at the goal line but a PI call against Notre Dame. I don't think he touched Warren.

Anyway Penn State in again, 24-17 to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Irish come right back, TD Greathouse, 54 yards. 24-24. 4.38 left, hopefully Notre Dame get the stop quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Where's my good buddy Realt Dearg Sec? I wonder is he at the game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Notre Dame get the stop. 2.34 left from the own 24 and three timeouts.

Jist caught the highlights, crazy last Quarter, won't spoil it 😀.

Loved that TD from Love, knee brace and all and pushing over like that, game changing moment that

Missed last nites game, sounded like it was a good game. How do you think tonight's game will go. Ewers up against his old alma mater!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

I wish! Am in New Orleans at a conference, was watching it with some friends from Notre Dame so we had a stupidly nerve wracking evening with a great end to it. I actually had full confidence they'd win, even in those last few minutes (and I'm never optimistic). They are a special team in fairness, nothing phases them

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,212 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Just caught up on the highlights - two very competitive games, though OSU looked great from the off last night, it looks like they didn’t get away from Texas till very late on. Penn St v ND could have went either way till the end, well done to the Irish though.

CFP Championship Game - Ohio St v Notre Dame, Monday 20th January 12:30am, Sky Sports NFL.

Neither team impressed on offense last night. If you struggled in that game you are going to struggle against Notre Dame. I expect a very low scoring championship game with both defenders on top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Agree, I think ND showed they have problems on offense, including in the oline that I thought was invincible before, but their defense is going to be hard hard hard to get past. I love defensive play, so I'm all good with it, but it'll make for a real chess match final. Only wish it wasn't on a Monday night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

So all about to kick off.

A lot of people picking the Buckeyes to win it. Former fighting Irish Golden Tate said it well in my opinion, he said Notre Dame have to keep in in a phone booth and I agree with that, thing is they've done that pretty much all season so it's nothing new. It's gonna be tough, it's going to be very physical and I think the Irish do it.

Let's be clear, all the stars have aligned here. The first black coach ever to reach a national football championship game goes for the win on Martin Luther King day in MLK's home town.

    Go Irish!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

TD Notre Dame, Riley Leonard in. Riley was fantastic on the drive,34 rushing yards, 31 passing. A ten minute TD drive.

That's the offense doing their phone booth bit. Now the defense needs to stop Smith and Egbuka.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

Some drive by ND. Reilly Leonard looks exhausted after that. Hopefully he can keep it up. Let's go Irish!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,898 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Great opening drive by ND, took 9:45 off the clock in 18 plays, had two 4th down conversations.

Leonard carried it on half of those 18 snaps.

And they never got into a third and long situation, all the third downs were very short.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

It was a great opening drive but it isn't sustainable, he looked banjacksed at the end of the drive.

OSU had a great play call for that TD. Amazing there's only been two drives, it's flown by

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,012 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yeah it's gone so fast. into the second quarter in what 40 minutes I think.

A good drive from the Buckeyes, Smith is such a weapon.

Riley had plenty of time to recover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,076 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Poor drive there, mystified by the run call on second and 25.

Yeah, buckeye making plays look easy. Smith is a big threat also egbuka had a great game v Texas. Looks good tonight too.
