Boise will be at best no.4. I'm not fully convinced they'll be the fourth team. The ACC is the third biggest conference and Clemson beat two seeded teams the last two weeks.

I think it'd be wrong if a three loss team got that fourth spot but nothing would surprise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I think it's a big ask to jump Clemson from 17th to a spot higher than 10th which is where Boise State is right now, especially after Boise State doing the needful and winning their conference final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I get that and I think Boise should get it. You have to remember Florida State going unbeaten and not getting in last year. It's the ACC versus the Mountain west. Those two things may affect the committee.

And being honest I think Clemson beat Boise all day everyday. I'm thinking now, as I type this, if I was on that committee I'd have to vote for Clemson. In their last five games they beat Virginia tech, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and SMU. Boise beat nobody as good as those teams.

Do you think Boise are better than Clemson?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I hear what you have been saying about ACC v Mountain West.

But Boise State have been ahead of Clemson in every CFP ranking thus far.

Plus they have been both a couple of ahead of and a couple of places behind SMU on various weeks in the CFP rankings.

Obviously Clemson beat a higher ranked team in their championship game than Boise State.

And yeah Clemson would probably beat Boise State, but it's a big jump from 17 and one would not expect Boise State to fall from 10.

The big question is will SMU fall from 8 far enough to allow Alabama in.

    Bama are out. Good decision.

Clemson @ Texas winner plays Arizona State.

Tennessee @ Ohio State winner plays Oregon.

SMU @ Penn State winner plays Boise State

Indiana @ Notre Dame winner plays Georgia.

ND have to be looking at this and thinking that in the long term they'll need to join a conference, they're disadvantaging themselves in the new system by not being in one. TV deal or no TV deal, the chance to be seeded is huge, they should join the ACC as they have in every other sport.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Notre Dame’s thinking is apparently that they’ll get their bye week anyway by not playing on championship weekend. But yeah, they can be seeded no higher than No 5 in this system, which means they’ll have to play three games over Christmas/New Year to reach the national championship game.

So the bad news? Next weekend is (almost) completely bare as far as CFB on TV is concerned, being reserved for the Army-Navy game. The only fixture being televised here is an FCS bowl, Jackson St @ South Carolina St in the Celebration Bowl at 5pm Saturday.

The good news? The longest bowl season ever starts after that! Not sure if we’ll be getting the two CFP first round games ESPN has sublicenced to TNT US though.

In the Sky Sports listing the Salute to Veterans Bowl is also listed at 2am on Sunday morning for insommiacs...

    South Alabama v Western Michigan

Well based in how it worked out I think Notre Dame have a great chance to make it all the way. Georgia will not like playing them and they'll beat Penn State if they meet.

Longhorns would be my favourites to meet Oregon in the semi on the other side of the draw. I said a couple of weeks ago that I felt the Dicks, Longhorns and fighting Irish were the best teams in it. I still think one of them wins it.

I felt like the Georgia Texas game Saturday changed my mind about a lot of that, think Georgia looked like they're figuring it all out at the right time and they're going to go on a run and win it all. Don't fancy ND facing them but they'll have to do it eventually so, whatever. I dunno, I'm ever the pessimist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

It's a shame that SMU @ Penn State, and Clemson @ Texas clash almost directly with Chiefs v Texans and Ravens v Steelers respectively.

I know the NFL have for decades been playing games on late December Saturdays because the college season is over, but this year is very different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The NFL should be respecting the college football playoffs and I'm certain they'll have low numbers for those two games because college football is huge.

Texans vs Chiefs isn't that important. Houston have won their division, Chiefs have won their division. The Chiefs have a two game conference lead over the Bills with three games left.

Steelers Vs Ravens is more important as there is only one game between them but even if the Ravens win the Steelers retain top spot because of their conference record.

I'm a big NFL fan but I'll be checking in on those games on my phone while I watch the playoffs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,006 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

NFL are in competition with the NCAA, they don't ever work together AFAIK. The NFL from what I can see would love (like THE EPL) to play games on all 7 days, and cover Thursday Saturday, Sunday, and Monday already. I don't think midweek games is really in the American culture though.

It would be so much easier to stick to High School/Friday, College Saturday, NFL Sunday, but money talks, CFB had being edging into Friday night in recent years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

CFB have been doing Friday nights for years including ranked teams.

Saturday has always been CFB day and the NFL would never go on a Saturday during the CFB regular season because they wouldn't have the viewers.

They shouldnt be doing a Saturday during their regular season when the playoffs are on and they won't do it again after the figures for this Saturday come out because they'll be the big losers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I don't think midweek games is really in the American culture though.

It absolutely is in sports that have a lot more games than football.

Baseball, hockey, and both college and pro basketball play every night of the week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

CFB has a bigger following than any other college sport. It's the physicality of the sport is why you don't have many midweek games.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The law (Sports Broadcasting Act 1961) only protects CFB until the second Saturday in December which is why the NFL can schedule regular season games on Saturday late in the season. It’s a pity that clashes can’t be avoided but they are really in competition with each other and the only power that be that will stop them clashing is ESPN, which covers the vast majority of college football (not the Big Ten, though) and will have all the bowls bar one or two (the Sun Bowl, which is on CBS, and I think one other that’s on either Fox or the CW). But ESPN’s influence over the NFL is limited, they only have the Monday Night Football package (which includes some late season Saturday games). But I digress.

Anyway, Bowl Season is here and will go on for the best part of a month, the longest I can remember. I won’t even attempt to list all of the bowls on TV but here’s the CFP Round of 12 schedule (Sky Sports Mix unless otherwise stated).

Friday 1am No 7 Notre Dame v No 10 Indiana (Sky Sports NFL)

Sat 5pm No 6 Penn St v No 11 SMU

    9pm No 5 Texas v No 12 Clemson

    1am No 8 Ohio St v No 9 Tennessee

PS I’ve listed there the European way - but these first round games are not neutral site games and of course should be eg Indiana @ Notre Dame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

One aspect of all this is that the NFL games are both during the day, the first at noon local time the second at 4.30pm local time.

It's a long time since the NFL had both late December Saturday games on during the day, one was usually 4:30 local the other prime time (7pm or so) local.

And if you look at the network the first game is NBC\Peacock the second is FOX, so at least one if a regular network broadcast.

By contrast the two CFP games on Saturday during the day are on TNT\Max while the two prime time games on Friday and Saturday nights are on ABC\ESPN

So even though the NFL did not yield the whole day to the CFP the did not get the prime time Saturday night slot either.

I think it's 134 yards that Jeanty needs to break Barry Sanders record.

He's going to face a top rushing defense.

SMU are no.4 allowing 93 yards per game. Penn State are no.9 allowing 103 ypg.

Jeremiah Love on a 98 yards rush for the opening td.

17-3 at halftime. Irish defense has been superb, offense has been decent.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The final score line seriously flatters Indiana - ND were up 27-3 at the two minute warning and the Hoosiers scored two very late touchdowns at a point the game was basically done anyway.

The Irish travel to the Sugar Bowl to play No 2 Georgia at 1:45am on New Years Day night (technically it is 2nd Jan for us at that stage)Too late for most of us at that time of year I expect!

I'd be very surprised if the NFL TV ratings aren't far ahead of the college play-offs tonight, so I can't see the NFL being 'the big losers' as you put it.
But, even if I'm wrong and the college ratings are higher or at least eat into the NFL ratings, the NFL will probably regard it as an acceptable loss-leader. Because remember having these two games on Saturday was just to enable the same 4 teams to play on Christmas Day (Wednesday) which is where the NFL have hit the Netflix jackpot.

By the same token, the early kick-off times today for NFL (as mentioned by Fr Tod) is likely linked to the first Xmas Day game also being 1pm ET, rather than the NFL 'yielding' the time-slot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

That's true, I didn't even know who was playing Christmas day, so I didn't consider that as a reason.

As it turns out this season a Tuesday is the only day KC don't play.

Penn State defense on fire early in. 14-0, two pick sixes.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Penn St are walking it, I’m afraid.

My heart goes out to Jennings. He's had no time to show off his talent. He should stay in college another year and go into the transfer portal, big schools would be very interested I'm sure.

He's got NFL skills, another year at a big school would help him greatly.

2 blow out games to start these new playoffs, disappointing viewing so far

I think we are about to see another blowout. I can't see any way that Clemson can hang with Texas. They are the same level as SMU and Texas are better than Penn State on both sides of the ball.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

At this stage it really doesn’t look like Clemson will trouble Texas. 28-10 at halftime. That’ll be three home wins from three.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,077 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

The absolutely outdated, pointless and stupid conference system continues to find new ways of making CFB an inferior product.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I may have to take that back! Clemson have reduced the Texas lead to seven. I still think Texas will do it, but with only a FG since HT I’m not so sure now!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

And Texas get a TD on the very next drive. Back in control.

Glad to see Penn state, notre dame and texas get through. Looking forward to tenn v ohio game now if I can stay awake! 😄

There were probably people in the stands that couldn't stay awake. Whole weekend was all duds. Hopefully next week will be better

Another blowout in the night game. Ohio State destroyed Tennesse.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,218 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

To be fair Clemson @ Texas was no blow out, Clemson came to play and Texas was never out of sight, even if they never surrendered the lead either.

Anyway hopefully the QFs will be more competitve:

New Years Eve 12:30am No 3 Boise St v No 6 Penn St (Fiesta Bowl)

    New Years Day

6pm No 4 Arizona St v No 5 Texas (Peach Bowl)

10pm No 1 Oregon v No 8 Ohio St (Rose Bowl Game)

1:45am No 2 Georgia v No 6 Notre Dame (Sugar Bowl).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,006 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

At least they won it before the end of the 1st Quarter, could go to bed at a reasonable hour!

Disappointing set of games overall, hopefully we get some good games in the Bowls next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The next round of the playoffs. I don't like Boise's chances against Penn State or Arizona State against Texas, they could both be blowouts.

I like Notre Dame to beat Georgia but it should be a very goid game and the Ducks versus the Buckeyes should be a cracker.

😄, yeah hopefully next weekend will be better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,006 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

I think this system is going to illustrate that there maybe 3 or 4 (at most) brilliant teams every year, and that there is a pretty sharp drop from there. Even last year, TCU got hammered in the 4 team playoff,so adding more teams unfortunately will leave more one sided games, at least in the short term.

It's not going to stop expansion, much less reverse it. All these organizations want more gsmes, not less (UEFA/FIFA NFL the same) even if they re not all competitive games, the TV money won't earn itself, and the monster must be fed.

Hopefully the structure will breath some life into next week's bowl games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,077 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

I think I'm the longer term the NIL and transfer portal will make for a wider spread of good teams, but the conference structure will always mean that most games every week will be one sided bores and now the playoffs will always end up with several teams who are there because they had a soft conference schedule rather than on merit. More than any other sport, CFB needs a divisional set up with promotion and relegation, and top teams playing each other week to week. But it is impossible to bring it about. With the result that it will always be a lesser product than the NFL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

With the result that it will always be a lesser product than the NFL

    I don't believe it's a lesser product.

It's different product, but not a lesser one.

And I suppose it depends on where you are coming from.

I'm Irish, brought up on GAA and soccer, I'm not at the same level of anyone from the heartland of the SEC or Big 10.

I can't tell them what they love is lesser than something else

I'm wise enough at this stage to know that all sports are different and just because a sport may be fast paced, or slow paced or have such and such a league structure that doesn't make it better than another sport

Yes the games were one sided last weekend and there is the potential for one-sided games in the next round but if I recall the wildcard weekend of the NFL has been a bit of a fest since they expanded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Oregon didn't have an easy schedule and they beat the Buckeyes by one point and Boise by three so all those teams are legit playoff contenders.

The SEC is by far the toughest conference. Tennessee let themselves down badly but it was in freezing cold weather which they have never experienced before.

Clemson put up a good fight against Texas to show they were legit.

Similar to Tennessee, SMU played in freezing cold weather which they have never experienced and lost badly. They lost by three points in their previous game to Clemson so you gotta think if the game was in good weather it would have been a lot closer.

There were question marks over Indiana but they only lost by 10 to Notre Dame. The Irish are my favourite to win the Championship so I'm calling the Hoosiers legit.

Haven’t managed to watch many bowls in their entirety this year, but the How Far Can they Fall Bowl, er I mean Reliaquest Bowl (only slightly less silly a name) between No 11 Alabama v Michigan was entertaining affair, the Wolverines dominant for most of the first half and truth be told Alabama left it late to start playing. They could have won it even in their final drive, but had they started better it wouldn’t have come to that and the Tide end the season 9-4 which is the worst they’ve done a long time. Remember these teams were No 4 and No 1 and played the Rose Bowl last year.

Enjoy the CFP quarter finals, and happy new year!

Great start for Penn State. Boise had a good drive, successful pass plays and fit stopped but missed the field goal. Penn State pretty much ran the ball all the way down to the 11 yard line ans then a TD pass to tight end Warren. 7-0 Penn State.

Jeanty 3 carries for 4 yards so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

Yeah, great start by Penn, jeanty being kept quiet so date!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,065 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Jeanty got it going a bit, he's got 35 yards but he's had two fumbles.

Nice drive by the Broncos for a TD to get them back in the game. Jeanty's first fumble led to a turnover but an Allar fumble gave it right back to them. Boise recovered the second fumble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,906 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Boise State have really upped their game on defense in the last few Penn State drives.

Looks like it could be a good game.
