They said Kansas just set a new record. No team in the history of college football with a losing record has beaten ranked teams in three consecutive weeks.

The ending in Tempe has gone ridiculous- 11 minute stoppage with 1 second left in the clock to conduct a review and then clear a pitch invasion (they had even pulled the goalposts partially down).

BYU need an unlikely touchdown to win.

edit: which despite an unlikely completion of a Hail Mary pass, they ended up short of the end zone. Had they time left for another play….but they didn’t.

Oh, and Penn State held on.

The Irish force Army to a three and out on the first drive of the game. Army had scored on their first drive every game before this one.

    Let's go Notre Dame!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Quick, dominant drive by Notre Dame, 7-0. I think I'm gonna enjoy this one.

Nd giving army a proper hammering. Looking forward to this being evidence that army were overrated all along and it's actually even more proof of how poor nd are really.

Firstly I have to say that I believe the best team in college football is Texas. After that I think it's hard to pick between Oregon, the Buckeyes, Notre Dame and Tennessee. Georgia and Penn state after that.

So after tonight Colorado, BYU, Ole Miss and Alabama all lost. The last two are definitely out now and unless there's shocking losses for all of Arizona state, BYU and Iowa State then Colorado are gone.

It's hard to know what will happen to Indiana after such a bad defeat.

I think we are looking at Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, Boise and SMU as the top ten. I've no idea how the other two.spots will shake out. Arizona State are now top of the big 12 so they'll likely get ranked.

As I type I'm watching the Aggies trying to beat Auburn in OT. It's going to a third overtime now. If they win they are in the SEC championship game, lose and they are gone.

    Auburn win it.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That’s awful of Alabama…another loss to an unranked team and not even a touchdown on the board. That’s the sort of thing Alabama would do to you under Saban, not the other way around. Being Alabama won’t save them now. Sky are not bringing us the Iron Bowl this year but could they lose to an Auburn that’s just beaten A&M?

(they had even pulled the goalposts partially down)

I actually think there is a mechanism to fold down to posts, and the staff did that in order to protect them as the fans were getting on the field, I noticed as they were clearing the field they were winding them back up.

As for the rankings and the playoffs, I've no idea.

I watched the Paul Finebaum show on the SEC network a few times last week and all he did was give out about Indiana and where they were ranked and their weak strength of schedule.

I know they lost heavily, but I wonder will he be as vocal about them after three SEC top 15 teams all lost to unranked opponents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,895 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I watched a couple of minutes of Idaho at Idaho State last night because I knew Ross Bolger the Idaho State punter is a former Laois u20.

He punted on their first drive and the commentators were singing his praises, saying he was the best in the Big Sky conference.

He ended up with three punts all over 50 yards, but it must be noted it was indoors in one of the weirdest venues in college football.

He's a sophomore I think and I know it's FCS football but he might be worth keeping an eye on.

He's averaging 44yds for the season with a long of 59.

So the latest bracket and ranking is out.

In come SMU, Tennessee and Arizona State, out go BYU, Ole Miss and Alabama.

Georgia have now clinched their SEC championship game slot, regardless of result v Georgia Tech, so they could still end up potentially in a 1-4 seed (even if they go three loss this weekend, which unlikely we’ve seen strange things happen this season).

Texas v A&M now effectively an SEC semifinal, and probably the big game of the weekend. The madness of the system is that if the No 20 Aggies win (again, unlikely but) and then (even more unlikely) beat Georgia they’d be almost certainly back in the rankings if not a 1-4 seed. That’s Saturday at midnight and one of the last regular season games.

By the way Friday’s first two CFB games are Sky Sports Mix rather than NFL, as there’s a clash with Raiders @ Chiefs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Indiana and Penn state is the right matchup if both don't get beaten again.

How is the mountain west team, Boise, in the four? I thought the Big 12 got that spot?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Afaik, the Power Four aren’t entitled as of right, to the top spots. The actual rules, from what I can make out are that the five top ranked conference champions are entitled to entry regardless of ranking, and the top four of these are entitled to seeds 1-4 irrespective of ranking.

The assumption of course was that the Power Four would be the top four ranked conference champions. Note that before the collapse of the PAC-12 it was going to be 5+1, instead of the 4+1 actually adopted….

Part of the problem is the Big 12 and the fact that there’s no team with less than two losses. Four teams tied on 6-2 (all on 9-2 overall) another five tied on 5-3 in conference play. So yeah, not clear who’s going to the championship game, even with just one round of games left. Boise St on the other hand are 10-1 overall, 7-1 conf have already booked their MWC Championship berth so there’s a clear leader there.

Edit: I mean to add, this outcome could have been foreseen, albeit I’m not sure people expected it to happen in the first year. In 2021-22 AAC champion Cincinnati made the 4-team CFP ranked ahead of the ACC, Big 12, and PAC-12 champions.

Cincy was a bit different though, they went unbeaten and beat Notre Dame. They beat a decent amount of good teams like Tulane, UCF, SMU and Houston who I think were ranked. Desmond Ridder was turning NFL heads with his performances.

I suppose Boise are getting huge credit for the loss to Oregon because they ran them so close. That's the only ranked opponent they've faced.

Arizona state have two losses but they beat three ranked teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,895 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

By the way Friday’s first two CFB games are Sky Sports Mix rather than NFL, as there’s a clash with Raiders @ Chiefs.

Sky has about 700,000 subs in Ireland alone.

That's 700,000 households and business getting the chance to watch College football without a extra sports subscription.

    Lucky them.

I'm thinking Travis Hunter is the best footballer I've ever seen in college football.

The last guy I remember who played at a high level on both sides of the ball was Champ Bailey but he wasn't as good as Hunter.

He's one of if not the best corner in college football and the best receiver.

If he doesn't win the Heisman it'll be just wrong. I couldn't believe he wasn't named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe award, which is for the best defensive back.

He's a finalist for a bunch of awards including best defensive player.

Georgia pull it out of the fire in quadruple overtime.

They grabbed two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter to get to overtime.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Apparently the second longest game in recorded CFB history. Eight overtimes. And after being down by 17 points too.

Just as well they’d already booked their SEC championship place prior….

Elsewhere, Ole Miss bet Miss St in their derby, while I hope those Sky Sports Mix viewers didn’t have the early game as their first taste of CFB as it was one way traffic in Colorado.

After a couple of "down" games where he "only" had 159 and 169 yards, Jeanty was back over 200 with 226 yards last night.

So he's now 340 yards behind Sanders with a minimum of 2 games left. Maybe more depending how the post-season goes.

Barring a big upset today (UNLV favoured by 17.5 over Nebraska) the championship game will be against against UNLV who held him to his lowest YPC of the season by far so it'll be tough going. If Boise win that, then they're in the Playoffs and the competition gets tougher, but a minimum of 1 more game after that (and more if they win). Even if they lose the MWC, they'll still have a bowl game. Jeanty will be draft bound so if he plays, it will absolutely be with the condition that he gets force-fed the ball (even more than usual) chasing the record.

I know all the talk is that Sanders did it in 11 games and Jeanty is being measured over 14 (and maybe more) but interestingly enough, Jeanty is currently "only" on 312 carries this season compared to Sanders 344 carries for his record.

So I don't think the number of games is the big caveat that it sounds like - Jeanty's season absolutely should be spoken of in the same breath. The fact that he put up just shy of 200 yards and 3 TDs against the number 1 team in the country should quieten any "quality of competition" arguments too.

Jeanty is averaging 7.5 yards per attempt, Sanders had 7.6.

If he's going to break it I'd like to see him tie the yards per attempt.

Sanders also had the rushing tds record for a season with 37.

I'm a huge Sanders fan, best RB I've ever seen and by a long way. I watched him in awe every time I seen him play. He's 4th all time for rushing yards in the NFL despite having only a 9 year career. He averaged 5 yards per carry for his professional career. Only one other person in the top ten averaged 4.5 or better, that's Adrian Peterson.

    Wolverines beat the Buckeyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

And Sth Carolina beat Clemson...... UT survive an early scare to beat Vandy and stay on course.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

We are, unfortunately not getting the Iron Bowl this year, which is a pity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Threatening to be a Bama blowout at this point.

Crazy scenes after The Game..... Michigan lads channeling their inner Graham Souness, planting a fleg in the centre of the Ohio field, which finally woke up the Ohio players who belatedly decided to hit and tackle the Michigan lads. Local cops let lose some pepper spray on some visiting players too apparently.

Pity the Buckeye lads didn't show as much energy in the proceeding couple of hours I guess, but not much class shown by either team at the end.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

to be fair, No 6 Miami FL @ Syracuse is 28-28 in the mid third, so vindicating Sky’s choice to skip the Iron Bowl from that pov.

Miami FL will book a spot in the ACC Championship with a win.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

leaving aside all that stupidity, that result has massive playoff implications as OSU are now more or less out of the Big 10 Championship baring an unlikely collapse for Penn St at this point. That will lose them the No 2 slot at the very least and send them collapsing down the rankings, even if they stay top 12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Now Miami lose a 21 point lead to go down to Syracuse.... No team able to put together a run of games it seems....

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    Unbelievable loss. Very competitive game.

SMU v Clemson is ACC Championship, and Miami FL will also be falling in the rankings.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

SEC Championship is Georgia v Texas.

Big 12 Championship still tbc, BYU v Huston is still in play but BYU are leading.

BYU won, so the Big 12 ended on a four way tie. According to the tiebreaker rules (which I don’t quite understand) championship game is Iowa St v Arizona St.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I got to see SMU for the first time this weekend. I was very impressed by the QB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,895 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

    So here's the latest bracket.

SMU seeded 3 and Boise State seeded 4.

    Miami of Florida out.

All to play for in those championship games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It'll be interesting to see what happens if Georgia lose the SEC championship to Texas and become a three loss team. I don't think they'll be out but they could drop to no.12.

What's going to happen if Clemson beat SMU?

Penn state being ranked three is a joke. They lost to the Buckeyes and played only one other ranked team which was Illinois. Tennessee being ranked ahead of SMU and Boise state is a complete joke too. They beat Alabama but lost to Georgia and Arkansas. Neither of those are impressive teams and most of the other teams they played have losing records. I'd guess they had the weakest schedule of any SEC team.

I think we'll see a lot of changes after the championship games. Whoever loses the big 10 drops below Notre Dame who'll finish three and get ranked at five.

And five is the best spot because if you win you face Boise or UNLV and then likely the winner of a tough matchup between the big 10 champ and whoever they play which is most likely an SEC or Big 10 team.

Anyway that playoff bracket won't be anything like it is now.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    Your championship weekend TV picks:

Friday 1am Tulane @ No 24 Army (AAC)

    Saturday

    5pm No 16 Iowa St v No 15 Arizona St (Big 12)

    9pm No 5 Georgia v No 2 Texas (SEC)

    1am No 17 Clemson v No 8 SMU (ACC)

However, the biggest game won’t be on TV here, No 3 Penn St v No 1 Oregon for the Big 10 - Sky can only show ESPN’s games, and that ones on CBS.

Jeanty had a quiet first half but he's up to 172 yards at the end of the third quarter.

Barry Sanders sent him a mess age before the game saying records are made to be broken, go get it and best wishes. Class act is Barry.

    Boise lead 21-0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Army gonna do it, Jacksonville State won by 40.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It was 6-3 Texas at halftime and Beck walked off limping at the end of the half after an injury on the last play. He's out and in comes Gunner Stockton and he lights it up straight away and leads Georgia up the field for a TD to take a10-6 lead.

Texas dominated the first half but penalties cost them big. They need to cut out the penalties now if they want to get back in this game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

I'm thinking it's swaying Georgia's way, Stocktons looking better than beck. Texas still conceding penalties

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Texas need a TD on this drive or it's over I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭rogeyspoint

Yeah, good play there by texas. They're back in it. At least its a close game not like than the previous game this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Nothing going right for Texas. A fake punt, two fumbles and Georgia get away with it. A pick earlier where the ball bounced off the receivers hands straight into the defenders hands. That pick was not so good, for me it's on Ewers. They need a three and out to have any hope of getting it to overtime and they have to depend on that kicker which is not good either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Why on earth did Georgia go pass there? A run up the gut and take the field goal forcing Texas to need a TD. Makes absolutely no sense, very surprised at Kirby Smart, of all the coaches I wouldn't expect that from him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I just have this feeling that Georgia will fumble and Texas will recover but I'm not at all confident it'll go that way. It's just a feeling.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Georgia win the SEC in absolutely dramatic fashion in overtime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I thought there was a pretty clear hold by no.4 on that touchdown run. I might be wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

A bad start cost SMU, they'll definitely get in. Penn State were better than I thought they'd be against Oregon.

I had this moment where I was thinking Army might get in but it'd be mad for a team in the 20's to suddenly jump up that far. Their only loss was to Notre Dame but they got a bad beating.

It's just that their win was really impressive last night.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,211 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

So more or less now guaranteed CFP slots

No 1 Oregon - Presume will stay No 1

No 5 Georgia (prob 2 seed)

    No 10 Boise St

    No 15 Arizona St

    No 17 Clemson

Not necessarily in that order mind though Oregon should stay No 1 and Georgia beating No 2 Texas should see them move up to No 2. Be interesting to see if Clemson moves up a bit after beating No 8 SMU for the ACC.

The other question is are the Committee absolutely determined 3-loss Alabama should be in?

    Final rankings are at 5pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,895 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

So Clemson will get that 12th seed and the seeds with a bye will be Oregon, Arizona State, Georgia and Boise State.

Clemson just got Arizona State a bye.

Alabama have to be out, you really can't make any other case for them, they are a three loss team that didn't reach a championship game.

If you make a case for Alabama you have to make as case for South Carolina and Ole Miss.

CFP selection show then Red Zone, my Sunday night viewing starts an hour earlier today.

Even though it was a low scoring game I thought it was very exciting, plenty of plot twists.
