So yeah, this week’s “why are the Aggies ranked so low…”. They’ve beat LSU 38-23 and barring a slip up their derby v the Longhorns is now basically an “win and in” for the SEC Championship Game. Surely they now deserve a top 11 ranking at this point?

Not really much else of note in terms of the overnight games, Miami FL beat FSU well in the game Sky did give us. Vanderbilt nearly pulled off a second upset, but the Longhorns held on.

This week’s AP poll (the last before the official CFP rankings start).

Texas A&M finally break into the top 10, at No 10, Notre Dame are also back in the top 10 at No 8, Brigham Young to No 9. Texas drop to No 6 leaving Georgia the sole remaining SEC representative in the top 5. The top 4 are “as you were”, Oregon, Georgia, Penn State and OSU.

Saturday (KO times one hour earlier than usual)

    4:00pm No 19 Ole Miss @ Arkansas

    7:30pm Florida @ No 2 Georgia

    11:30pm Louisville @ No 11 Clemson

I always look forward to checking Ashton Jeanty's stats each week. Another ridiculous game today.

Georgia get out of jail in Jacksonville - the 34-20 scoreline seriously flatters them, it was a close game.

    There for Oregon to win.

Ohio State and Penn State a good game, big win for Day.

    Oregon comfortable enough against Michigan.

Very good finish to Texas tech knocking off the undefeated Iowa State.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

A lot of the top teams on byes yesterday.

The game of the day was in the early window and would have suited us perfectly but was on Fox, so not in Sky’s rights. No 4 OSU beat No 3 Penn State.

Texas A&M’s dreams possibly shattered by an upset by the South Carolina Gamecocks.

A couple of other losses by ranked v unranked: Illinois, Iowa St, Kansas St, and Clemson all lost.

Flattered, need to stop throwing the ball to the opposition is what it is.

while we wait on the CFP rankings, a heads up that Sky’s showing ESPN’s College Football Final now. I haven’t seen it in the schedule before.

Here is what the playoff bracket would look like based on the Top 25 released tonight

With other interesting things happening stateside last night, I had almost forgot! Interesting that two loss Alabama snuck in there ahead of teams with better records. The Committee love them.

Saturday on Sky, and a choice of viewing…

    5pm Florida @ No 5 Texas

    8:30pm No 3 Georgia @ No 16 Ole Miss

    12:30am FSU @ No 10 Notre Dame (Sky Sports+)

    12:30am No 11 Alabama @ No 15 LSU

I'm thinking there's a real possibility that Indiana are underrated. I love watching them, I hope they go all the way. Well coached, lots of talent on both sides of the ball. Just a really, really good team.

They play Michigan this weekend and then Purdue. Win both of those and they'll face Oregon and then we'll know.

He has an insane 73% completion rate, 19 TDs and only 3 ints. For me he should be favourite for the Heisman. I don't know whose the left tackle but he's been very impressive.

On the other side of the ball Kamara is a beast. Fisher looks like a great one too.

A good crop of solid receivers and tight ends. Cooper looks like a really special one.

Two really solid running backs as well. I really can't find any chink.

Georgia lose to Ole Miss - incredibly their first loss to anyone other than Alabama since 2020.

Ole Miss fans invaded the pitch with 16 seconds left, and had be cleared only for a second pitch invasion when the game formally concluded.

Now if two-loss Alabama can stay in the CFP race, Georgia probably can too - but it’s still a massive blow. Be interesting to see what happens to them (and Miami FL) in the rankings Tuesday.

Alabama play LSU in the late window in a must win for both really. Realistically Alabama lose and being Alabama won’t be enough to save them as far as playoffs are concerned.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Bama hammer LSU. They’ve no more games against ranked opposition and if they don’t slip up they should be in (the Iron Bowl probably the most likely place for that, though on paper they should hammer 3-6 Auburn who still have to play Texas A&M before that).

Georgia on the other hand still have games against Tennessee and their derby against Georgia Tech which could be a banana skin.

The next two weeks are fairly quiet for big games, apart from Tennessee @ Georgia next week and OSU-Indiana the week after, before the rivalry weekend that ends the regular season at Thanksgiving.

    More Jeanty madness

I read a great tweet that said "Ashton Jeanty's Heisman campaign suffers a huge blow as he's held to 209 yards and 3 touchdowns." 😁

I was awake at 7am this morning so I just checked the scores and noticed that 9th ranked at 4th seed undefeated BYU were losing The Holy War with Utah 19 to 21.

So I decided to watch it.

With 1:36 left the BYU QB was sacked at his own 1 on a 4th and 9, but there was a defensive holding penalty so they survived, went up the field and kicked a FG to win the game as time expired.

I love college football, especially when you can watch it from 5pm in the evening to 7am the next morning.

The have three teams left to play, all are bad against the run. Obviously a bowl game as well or potentially more if they make the playoffs.

He's gonna make the top five for single season rushing yards. I don't think he'll get to Barry Sanders record, he needs something like 850 yards to get there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

I think Boise could go all out to help him get the record, they speak about it a lot. He's averaging 193 per game and would need to average 178 over the next 5 to beat it.

It's just crazy that Sanders 2,600 yard record came in only 11 games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Imo Sanders is the greatest running back if all time. I think he's fourth all time in rushing yards but with way less carries than anybody else in the top ten. He averaged five yards per carry for his career. Adrian Peterson averaged 4.6 and everybody else is below 4.5.

I don't think he'll get the record. It only takes one top defense to make it impossible. It doesn't deserve to be broken over many more games either.

This is what the new playoff bracket looks like after last night's rankings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Obviously you took that before the CFP rankings came out. Top 4 now are Ducks, Buckeyes, Longhorns and Nittany Lions. BYU fell to 6 after falling over the line against Utah. The Hoosiers up to 5.

The rest are Tennessee, Notre Dame, Miami, Alabama, Ole Miss avd Georgia.

Unbeaten Army ranked 24. I think that's wrong. No way they should be ranked lower than two loss, nevermind three loss teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,899 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Obviously you took that before the CFP rankings came out.

Obviously you don't know how the playoffs work.

The power 4 conference winners (and for the sake of this in season bracket, the power 4 leaders) get seeded into the second round.

BYU didn't actually fall anywhere, they went up a few spots.

All the details, including that image are here.

You are right. I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for putting that up. I wrongly assumed that the top four seeds got the bye. I'm not sure how I feel about that. If say the Big 12 and ACC winners had two losses and an SEC team had one but wasn't champion I don't think it's fair that the Big 12 or ACC champion gets a bye.

At this moment in time it would be Tennessee and Texas A&M in the SEC championship game. If Tennessee won that game they have a bye and they have one loss. Texas would also have one loss and they are a far better team than anything in the ACC or Big 12.

I'm happy to hear that a conference champion ranked lower than 12 gets in. Does that apply to all conference champions? Like if you have two conference champions ranked below twelve do they both get in?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The idea is that you’re introducing an element of meritocracy into what up until now has been a subjective process. Any Power 4 team can play their way into the CFP by winning their conference championship. The Committee can’t just decide to replace them with Alabama just because they feel you can’t have a CFP without Alabama! Should mean the situation last year with FSU should never repeat. (Although given what’s happened to FSU since…)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

There was almost always controversy about who made the playoffs and who made the championship game before then.

The ACC and Big 12 are very weak right now. They don't deserve a bye.

Miami should have fallen a lot more after that loss in my opinion.

Yes the Seminoles lost out last year but who got in they you would have taken out? In all fairness the two teams ahead of them and the two behind them in the final standings would all have beaten them.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    I’m really in two minds.

Coming from Ireland the idea of a Committee selecting your playoff teams…it just seems wrong. Entry to playoffs should be based on success on the field and nothing else. By that measure two loss Alabama have no business being in the playoff spots ahead of one loss teams.

But the thing is FBS is really nine separate leagues, plus the PAC-2 and Independents, of varying strength, and the Committee I guess acts as an equalising mechanism in terms equalising it all up. So maybe two losses in the Big 10 or SEC is still better than one loss or no losses in other leagues. It’s a rather imperfect system though, you can only play what’s on front of you. FSU could have done no more last year and still lost out.

Anyway, Sky’s Saturday line up. I don’t think they’ve had a 10:30pm ET game before.

    5pm No 3 Texas @ Arkansas

    8:30pm Virginia @ No 8 Notre Dame

    12:30am No 7 Tennessee @ No 12 Georgia

    3:30am Kansas @ No 6 BYU

Coming from Ireland the idea of a Committee selecting your playoff teams…it just seems wrong.

I suppose college football doesn't lend itself to a league structure that we are familiar with, even a US league structure doesn't suit.

As you said it's really 9 different leagues, and those leagues are based on geography and money and politics rather than merit.

I think it's part of being an amateur sport, where (excuse the cliche) playing the game is as important as winning becoming undisputed champion.

It's not unlike other amateur sport like the GAA and pre professional rugby.

In the GAA the provincial championship had a huge influence on the All Ireland even though it was very lopsided.

In pre professional rugby the 5 nations and test matches held sway, there was never any reward for winning a test match back in the day, and even now all it counts to is world ranking.

There was no URC or super rugby league structure in the SH.

Yet people still supported their teams.

The 12 team playoff looks great, some of those on campus matchups in the first round have the potential to be really good matchups.

That FSU decision was correct, and their record since more or less backs the decision up.

Not a whole pile on early in college football today, I'm not sure what Sky are showing.

But there is an great game late,

#7 Tennessee at #12 Georgia 00:30am Irish time.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Georgia beat Tennessee despite a weak start, US media are predicting they’ll stay in the CFP race along with Alabama.

The shock of the night (practically morning our time) was No 7 BYU’s loss to unranked Kansas.

No 1 Oregon managed to avoid a banana skin against unranked Wisconsin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I loved Nick Saban's comment on college gameday yesterday.

He picked BYU but said he was uncomfortable with the pick. He said when you are looking to get the final score to win it's like basketball and you'll get caught out at some stage and it happened.

Oregon and Clemson were both very lucky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,899 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

So here is the latest bracket and things are shook up even more

BYU with their loss at the weekend are bumped down to 14, but get in as 12th seed because they lead the Big 12

The Mountain West leaders Boise State are ranked 12th but shoot all the way up to a 4th seed because they are one of the four highest ranked conference leaders.

Tennessee although ranked 11 drop out to make space for BYU, but they got hammered by Georgia on Saturday so they can't complain.

Georgia make it in after that win over Tennessee

SMU are also on the outside looking in even though they have the same 9-1 record as Miami of Florida with their only loss coming to BYU and they are 6-0 in the ACC.

    1. Oregon — highest-ranked conference champion (Big Ten) and seeded No. 1
    2. Ohio State — at-large pick (second team from the Big Ten), seeded No. 5
    3. Texas — second-highest-ranked conference champion (SEC) and seeded No. 2
    4. Penn State — at-large pick (third team in the Big Ten), seeded No. 6
    5. Indiana — at-large pick (fourth team from the Big Ten), seeded No. 7
    6. Notre Dame — at-large pick (independent), seeded No. 8
    7. Alabama — at-large pick (second team from the SEC), seeded No. 9
    8. Miami (Fla.) — third-highest-ranked conference champion (ACC) and seeded No. 3
    9. Ole Miss — at-large pick (third team from the SEC), seeded No. 10
    10. Georgia — at-large pick (fourth team from the SEC), seeded No. 11
    11. Tennessee — first team out of the CFP bracket
    12. Boise State — fourth-highest-ranked conference champion (Mountain West) and seeded No. 4
    13. SMU — second team out of the CFP bracket
    14. BYU — fifth-highest-ranked conference champion (Big 12), seeded 12

    All the above from

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Interestingly that shatters the assumption that seeds 1-4 would be the Power 4 champions. And two loss Alabama and Georgia both stay in the hunt (with two loss Tennessee just out of contention)

Penultimate weekend of the regular season, your TV games are:

    5pm No 9 Ole Miss @ Florida

    8:30pm No 14 BYU @ No 21 Arizona St

12:30am No 19 Army v No 6 Notre Dame (in New York City).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,899 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

    8:30pm No 14 BYU @ No 21 Arizona St

Not a matchup you usually see around these parts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Lane Kiffin was talking about making the SEC championship as being risky as regards qualifying for the playoffs. There's five teams on 8-2 and if you make that game you could end up with three losses. There's nothing that says a championship finalist is ahead of the other teams in the conference which really should be the case.

They need to fix this or all the conference championship games will become unimportant.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The four top ranked conference champions are automatically seeded 1 to 4 regardless of ranking, no?

So let’s take a hypothetical (and risky to predict given the number of 2-loss teams) Texas v Georgia SEC championship game, if Georgia won they would be entitled, provided they remained in the top four ranked conference champions, to be seeded above Texas regardless of actual ranking.

I’m assuming in this context that Texas don’t get beaten by A&M.

They should actually be able to show one more fixture as Notre Dame v Army counts as an Irish home game.

They’ve also got fixtures for the last weekend now announced and it’s a bumper.

    Friday 29th

    5pm Oklahoma St @ Colorado

8:30pm Miss St @ Ole Miss

    12:30am Georgia @ Georgia Tech

    Sat 30th

    5pm South Carolina @ Clemson

    8:30pm Miami (FL) @ Sycruse

    12:30am Texas @ Texas A&M

Yeah it's going to be a busy thanksgiving weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

If Georgia lose what happens? Are they penalised for a third loss? I mean there a bunch of teams who didn't make the championship game sitting on two losses. As it stands you can't penalize them for not making the championship game.

They have to change that next year and make the championship game loser the no.2 playoff seed from that conference. Otherwise no team will want to make the championship game.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

It’s one you have to consider alright . On the one hand win the championship game and you get a bye week and a New Years Six (er, Four?) Bowl via a lower seed. Lose the championship game and you might be out totally. Not get in the championship game and you’ll get your bye week anyway on championship weekend. Provided you still make the playoffs that is.
Deliberately trying not to make your championship game is really risky though, apart from the sportsmanship aspect, you could only really do it once you knew your playoff place was virtually in the bag. In other words you’d probably be doing it on Thanksgiving weekend against your local rivals. What would Bulldogs fans say about a deliberate loss to the Yellow Jackets? Playoffs or no playoffs is that a game they really want to lose?

Illinois getting a reality check in Columbus in the early game, with Ohio recovering from a slow start and threatening to blow them away entering the 4th Quarter. Expect IU to tumble down the ranks after this, their first real test? Florida threatening to blow a hole in the Ole Miss ship too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Flirida have improved a lot over the last four or five weeks.

The Hoosiers got off to a great start before the wheels came off. Cignetti has really improved them. If they can do something similar next season they should get better recruits and could become a powerhouse.

    Illinois coming back strong.

Rutgers were expected to beat Illinois. They are 6-4 with recent wins over Nebraska and Washington.

Illinois on the move though, need about another ten yards for a field goal to take the lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,977 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Got a cousin who traveled from Jersey for that game, he was very confident during the week 😁

Jaxon Dart sh1t the bed, 3 interceptions thrown within just over a minute late on as the Gators surely end Ole Miss playoff hopes worth a third loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Omg, Illinois score to take the lead with just over two minutes left, Rutgers go down the field for a td to take the lead again by 1 with 1 minute. Illinois get down the field looking to get into field goal range but penalties push them back. 4th and 13, TD Illinois.

Rutgers have 4 seconds, you couldn't rule it out. 35 points in the fourth quarter. Insane end to this game.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    BYU are losing.

Though one of the quirks of this system is that it nearly doesn’t matter where they are ranked as long as they remain ranked.

Ole Miss are surely done now.

The other one to watch is the close one on the Big 10 on CBS, that is if we could watch it. No 4 Penn St will probably hold on but it’s a close one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,035 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Delighted that BYU are losing. Can't believe Kansas are going to do it again. This will be three ranked teams in three weeks. They were horrendous for the first six weeks of the season.

They beat Iowa State two weeks ago and BYU last week. They lost to a last minute field goal from Kansas State, another ranked team, the week before those wins. Up by 16 in the fourth quarter against Colorado now.
