We’ve also had The Killers, Tame Impala & The Arctic Monkeys headline in the last two years. The geetars will be returning soon…..

I totally agree with Seath re: Fontaines! The reasons are ridiculous to overlook!

    They’re unbelievably good live

They’re very popular at the minute, everyone was talking about them after Glastonbury (and not just because of Grian’s dress) They have peaked everyone’s interest!

Added to that, you have “the big band are one of our own” context, which at EP would draw even more numbers to a stage!

Whilst not packing EA a couple of years back, it was defo full!! I would see them & hope for them as a headliner for EP next year no probs!

If Kodaline (irrelevant since 2011/2012), that Scottish pub singer & sticks dude are headliners & fontaines aren’t, well then Irish society & music as a whole is in big, big trouble!

Yeah I reckon Sabrina Carpenter is a shoe in for EP. I think Chappell roan is longitude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,493 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

Kylie Minogue doesn’t sell out 3 nights at 3 Arena in 2024, don’t think she’d even do 2 tbh. Same goes for Harris. Matter of fact if you’re booking EP for youngish people I’d argue Fontaines are a far better booking than Kylie Minogue was.

It would be a very poor showing if EP failed to get Irelands biggest band for a long long time. You flip flopped on them attending 2024 about 20 times.

They were being tipped to sub headline 2024 before Romance was even announced, obviously a massive album campaign will only push them up further. Given that they are Irish I would assume even if they are a bit smaller than the other acts that won’t matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭Navan Man01

And I know demographic & blah, blah! But Fontaines have a huge following amongst our youngsters, well the ones with taste anyway!

In case this helps anyone who has a loyalty code that didn't work we contacted Ticketmaster on the ask a question on the order page about being unable to use the code and they are refunding the extra paid between loyalty and full price so worth contacting them if you haven't already.

The capacity of EP has been minimum 30k since 2006. Clearly not a Maths major if you’re saying that the current 75k capacity is three or four times more than when those acts headlined.

And you’re also stating there’s no way Fatboy Slim could do the Calvin Harris headlining slot?

You’d previously, and consistently, stated that ticket sales were the crux for a booking. But not now with the Fontaines. You’d said that Spotify figures were significant but not now for a comparison between the aforementioned Irish acts.

Thus please define ‘broadly popular’ in factual terms as you’ve ruled out ticket sales, online streams and bestselling albums. This I gotta hear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

How were the Strokes an odd booking not to be repeated when we’ve seen The Killers, Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys all headlining within the past 24 months? Not miles apart these four acts.

Is there some berserk cognitive dissonance at play here?

It wasn't. We were 3 quarters back and there was loads of room around us... It was very quiet at the back. The likes of the waterboy's and faithless were fuller there last week. I was surprised as thought it would be jammed

Kylie has done two nights in 3 arena before but she has a dozen songs even that even a random person on the street could hum.

i didn’t flip flop 20 times. Was told and posted on here around Christmas that they were locked in. Subsequently they decided to change tact and do 3 arena headline shows as only shows here in 2024. I posted that info when I heard which was before the line up announcement. Bands can and do change plans that far out.

Truth of the matter is Fontaines being a headliner or sub really depends on who else is scheduled for that day. If likes of Dua lipa or a tame impala are playing same day as Fontaines then I could see them as sun headliner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,134 ✭✭✭Fanirish

Those recession years from 2008 - 2014 EP never sold out its capacity and that actual numbers on the crowd were in the 17-25k range. EP lost millions in those years and that’s why John Reynolds sold it to FR cause it couldn’t keep funding the accumulated loses.
Re fatboy Calvin Harris. Sure technically fat boy could play that slot. But do I think EP would book him for the main stage headline slot in the future. No.

The history of ticket sales in this country, spotify figures, hype/buzz etc are all factors in festival bookings and stage placement.
it’s the overall picture. The type of artist is also a factor.
for example Damien Dempsey has little to no Spotify listeners but he can sell thousands upon thousands of tickets here.

Kodaline have 100 times the Spotify listeners than damo, that doesn’t mean that damo sells 100 times less tickets here than them.
similarly kodaline have 4X the listeners to Fontaines. Does that mean that kodaline could announce and sell out 8 nights in 3 arena? Very very unlikely.

As for broadly popular, look at this years and last years headliners, show those line up to a random person in a pub or on the street and ask them do they know them and name a song and you’ll get a good reaction for most of them off a randomer. Do the same with Fontaines and it will be vastly different.
Everyone and that mother knows the likes of the killers, Calvin Harris, Billie eillish, kodaline, the script, Niall horan, snow patrol etc, whilst Fontaines aren’t at that level of notoriety yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Ricosruffneck

Ok, have we speculated who will headline or be upper tier next year.

I forsee an appearance from some of the below in upper tier

Wolf Alice, Bloc Party, Stereophonics, Razorlight

Headliners I'd enjoy but obviously won't show up since I want them to. Harry styles, Muse

Female head Dua Lipa? (Don't mind her)

the XX are a strong probability

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 373 ✭✭TenPicnics

    @Fanirish

No, you are WRONG. Just to pick one year from the range you cite: in 2014 it was WAY more than the "17-25k" you state.

Please, PLEASE let's not allow the 2025 EP discussion descend into the same old numbers rubbish we endured on this thread for the last year.

I think CMAT could be promoted to main stage, maybe sub headline.

Would like to see but who knows... John Grant, Phoebe Bridgers

I totally agree - great live, great albums, Irish band etc. But I don't know about headlining EP. They deserve to be and anyone that would attend it (those that don't really know the band too well) would be well impressed. But judging by the gangs from my workplace that attend EP, they know feck all about Fontaines. They know there are kinda punk/rock, but that is not the scene of many, many EP goers. A lot of people I know were really happy with the line-up. Thought Calvin Harris was brilliant, but didn't know much about Faithless. Thought Noah Kahn was really good, but only knew one song. But that was enough for them - to be present waiting for that one song. They thought Gerry Cinnemon was great fun. Thought Kylie Minogue was great cause they were there for "Cant Get you out of my head". I think that's more the demographic for EP. People lapping up the Saw Doctors, Mary Wallopers, Wolfe Tones etc. Because many people are there for the craic. There are loads there for the music too, but maybe not enough Fontaines worshipers to get them as headliners. Just my opinion.

But just to be clear - I would take Fontaines all day long. And I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to the new album. Skinty Fia is a classic.

You did, they weren’t playing, then they were, then they weren’t (only after it was obvious they weren’t playing based on other festivals). In fact I think I told you they weren’t playing and you still insisted they were.

Those 3 Arena shows were always happening regardless of whether they did EP or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭limabromac

personally I think that it doesn’t matter who plays on the main stage, as Electric Picnic has always been about all the smaller more intimate areas that are stumbled upon throughout the weekend, and enhance the essence of what makes this festival attractive… keep those areas, add more toilets and drainage, more recycling facilities and keep cups…. The overtake of corporate greed is so evident but there’s way to bypass the ‘instagrammy coachella’ nature of the festival by just rambling around and finding the moments….

CMAT was my absolute highlight of the weekend, what a talented artist, at one point she was crowd surfing on her back with ppl pulling her, almost letting her fall to the ground = vocals still A1🤘

She recorded a cracking song with John Grant “where are your kids tonight” I’d love to see them perform on stage together!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,524 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

Fuckin balls, Thursday entry sold out! I was hoping to stretch that until payday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,524 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

    2004: 10K (Sell out)
    2005: 22K
    2006: 25K (Sell out)
    2007: 32.5K (28k)

The festival sold out in 2008 (32,500)

2009, 10 and 11 were quite low years but I don’t know if this attendance was ever published. But believe it to be just under 20k. With a really low year in 2011, I think attendance was 12000.

2012 it started to come back, 22,000 tickets sold.

2013, Sellout (35,000) (Sold out on two fronts that year 😁)

    2014, Sellout (42000)

    2015, Sellout (48509)

    2016, 17 & 18 Sellout (55000)

    2019, Sellout (57500)

2020, sold out but cancelled (70000)

    2021, not run

    2022, 23, sellout (70000)

    2024, Sellout (75000)

    2025, sellout (75000?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 373 ✭✭TenPicnics

CMAT my highlight too, have seen her previously and thought she was phenomenal, but last Sunday in Elec Arena, my favourite venue, was even better. Is definitely among my top all-time EP experiences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Kylie did 2 nights at the 3Arena thirteen years ago. Not possible now.

In terms on the Fontaines at EP this year you said at first that there was categorically no chance of them playing. You stated this a dozen times before reversing and saying they were definitely booked whilst denying the previous stance. You criticised other posters for doubting your claim of a booking and you later said they’d pulled out. Back ad forward with further contradictions.

None of us mind good rumours or best guesses. However declaring a definitive impossibility of attendance then a definitive booking followed by an alleged pull out may not give us confidence in your veracity. You must surely understand that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Agreed re the other main arena stages and the fringe stuff. However, if you have top calibre acts on the upper tier of the poster it sets a very different tone.

And despite loving the great stuff in the tents there’s nothing, for me, that beats a top act on top form finishing the day on the biggest stage of all, . Many of my very best memories of the fest are headlining sets by the Bad Seeds, Cure, Arcade Fire, Strokes, Orbital, LCD Soundsystem, New Order, Roxy Music, Leftfield, Sigur Ros, Bjork, New Order, Kendrick Lamar, etc. Those were big moments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭Hank the DJ

Would St. Vincent be big enough here to command a headline slot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Excellent compiling @Fatfrog. I’d only dispute the 2010/2011 figures, I’m pretty sure from contemporaneous reporting that the attendance never fell below 20k. The lowest I recall was 22k and unless offered clear figures to the contrary I’d assume that to be correct. Couldn’t have been 12k as that would have entirely derailed EP, not sustainable to continue in 2012 after only selling a third of capacity the year before. 2011 Aldo wasn’t any sparser than previous years with huge crowds at Arcade Fire, Chemical Bros, etc.

My very last post on attendance numbers I promise. And we must also be aware that when the festival was struggling through the recession it was the likes of us that saved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Ricosruffneck

Nah, she's been on a downward trajectory since her last album.

I like her but don't think she could head the EA anymore. She'd be high billing for sure though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

That coupling would be class. Grant’s performance in 2013 one of my all-time favourites and Glacier with Sineád maybe the best EP moment of all. The atmosphere in Rankins (?) was astonishing. Alas never to be repeated.

New album seems to have given her a lift again, Daddy's home was a bit crap in fairness.

So ATN it is for her, oh no…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Ricosruffneck

    It's decent.

Although she's not able to sell out her own US tour with very small capacity venues, I don't think she's done anything larger than Olympia in Ireland.

Whoever did the marketing for this tour didn't do great.

In comparison to the Masseduction tour/Daddy's home. Couldn't go anywhere without hearing about those albums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Ricosruffneck

I agree, never listened to Daddy's home after it's first playthrough. Shame

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭crl84

    Zero chance.

Not sure she's even headline EA. Would depend on day and lineup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

No substance. No verifiable facts. Just contradiction and waffle. Please don’t start as you mean to go on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭Stillill42

Did she headline EA last time round? She was fecking deadly whatever the slot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭Mucker46

2018, Kooks headlined. She was brilliant that year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,603 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Aaarrgghh! And they were back two years ago. Isn’t post-Brexit border (quality) control supposed to stop that sort of stuff from happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,524 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

Correction, it was the year leftfield played that I felt had the super low attendance, this was 2010, not 2011. Camped in Hendrix, there were notable spaces between the tents, it felt like you were meeting the same people at every corner over the weekend. But admittedly the attendance figure is a complete guesstimate!

Fred Again is wearing a Fontaines' Romance t-shirt headlining Reading .. does that count towards them being popular enough for a headline/subheadline slot or should I add up the number of Spotify plays for him and Fontaines combined and then divide by number of nights sold out at the 3Arena to reach a conclusion?

The kooks are like Noah Kahan to me, everything i've heard about them has been against my will and I don't know a single song of theirs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,493 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

Like a lot of bands from that era they had some very successful singles from the debut/follow up album and not much to write home about afterwards. Their first two albums arent bad

Good for them, still don't care and never will.

I have finite time left on this earth (few decades at best), not wasting it on those fuckers.

Almost correct antfin. You just forgot to multiply by the square root of the capacity of the electric arena.

The 'R' word is so 2014. Everybody knows you now don't mention the 'O' word. Some editing required under the paddling section, @scruff monkey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭Stillill42

Tsk tsk Rico. You've unwittingly just added to their Spotify numbers, thus proving how popular they are and how clueless we are. We're just cogs in the machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,524 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

Loads of lovely clips of acts coming via the BBC socials from Leeds and Reading! Such a shame our national broadcaster milked it to bits and made it unsustainable.

The main stages are all covered by camera's now, aside from rights and agreements, surely it would be much easier to cover theses days! No need for a massive tree house studio, just a small crew.
