Following the construction of the Metro system to Dublin Airport (which was completed in 2019 …. ;)) and the construction of the Children's Hospital on budget (ahem) and on time, FF Senator Malcolm Byrne has projected plans for Ireland to host the 2072 Olympic Games.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2024/0811/1464469-ireland-olympics-senator/

Now some on here might be cynical but I remember, in 1992, when Gay Mitchell promised to bring the Olympics to Dublin.

We are quite fortunate to have such incredible leaders in FF/FG.

Perhaps Official Ireland could get greyhound racing in as an Olympic Sport for 2072?

Surely we'd be guaranteed a gold medal in hurling.

Wouldn't in be great to be a politician, you get to live safely in a bubble with a nice salary knowing you don't have to worry about the many things the rest of the country have to worry about.

There's probably more realistic things to aim for like u18s or u20s maybe.

Could we host the Europeans or is that beyond us? We've no athletics stadium.

I doubt the Olympics will be still around by then. There's already waning interest in cities putting their hand up. Brisbane is already looking to cut costs as the public aren't happy with the amount of taxpayers money being spent on it. And that's from a sports mad country.

I think we should go for the Winter Olympics.

We have as much chance of hosting mount Everest expeditions, Antarctic explorations and the Paris Dakar rally as hosting the Olympics

We did have part of the tour de france though, so maybe!

    Something to look forward to.

The Middle Eastern countries are itching to get in on the action hosting events like this and they have more money that they know what to do with.

Greyhound racing and hatchet fights outside Headford rd. Supermacs (last man standing wins gold (no silver/bronze))

The surfing this year was in Tahiti. And in 1956 the Melbourne games staged their equestrian events in Sweden. Ireland could agree with some other main host venue to stage certain events here in future.

After reading this suggestion, and Minister Burke's idea of a €750 youth tax credit to discourage emigration, I'm wondering are our politicians genuinely stupid or do they just say these things to get their name printed in the media.

It's us that were stupid for not taking our chance to abolish the Seanad.

There is an election coming soon. When they go campaigning, people will ask:

    • What have you done for the area?
    • Why can't I get a mortgage?
    • Why is my daughter moving to Australia?
    • And for some people, who are you again?

To avoid that, the insecure ones are getting their names in the paper.

Im surprised it took a politician this long to come up with the suggestion.

These utterances usually happen in the immediate aftermath of Ireland winning a medal, but it's been almost a week since we won a medal.

Also the time scale, 2072, he's adding plenty of buffer there not to be declared a clown straight away.

    750 to stay

Or endless 100,000s to come here, free accommodation, bills, etc, etc and never have to work. Just wipe your arse with your id documents and flush on the way in.

    Thanks FFG !

The whole undercurrent to the bertie bowl and sports campus ireland was so that the country would have the infrastructure in place to hold a multi sports championship.

The campus would need to be finished with an athletics stadium but Ireland could conceivably host a European Games or youth Olympics

We don't have a big athletics stadium so we couldn't host the European Athletics championship and definitely not the Worlds. It would be a complete white elephant also if we built one.

We could definitely host the European u18 or u20s though. They seem to be in small stadia like Santry.

Even if we had all the money required and got it. They need to target the 2060 games to be ready for 2072 going by their track record on things on time

We could have the dressage in Shannonside Foods. Lets see how those fancy, dancing horses like that.
