A trailer is out for Jason Reitman’s film about the first episode of Saturday Night Live, specifically the 90 minutes before the live broadcast when it all appeared to be going to hell. The cast is mostly unknowns, which I think is appropriate considering the SNL cast were also unknowns when the show started:

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I just twigged that Nicholas Braun - who you might know as Greg in Succession - is playing two roles: Jim Henson and Andy Kaufman. I didn't recognise Matthew Rhys as George Carlin since I only saw Carlin when he was older with shorter grey hair.

There are two versions of the poster: the other one is NSFW.

Can't see this doimg well outside of America.

The pull of SNL doesn't really translate international.

I remember studio 60 tv show. Which was a dramatic take of the making of an SNL type show. I hope this film go down this route that making the show is such a life and death thing.

The box office isn't what it used to be, but after the premiere at Telluride, critics are generally positive. I've like Kim Matula (Jane Curtin) since I saw her in LA To Vegas a few years ago.

I watched the movie this evening, and I think it's a better movie than the trailers would lead you to believe. It isn't non-stop people shouting and running around, there are some quieter, thoughtful moments too. Nor did it shy away from just what horrid people some of them were.

Chevy Chase was not the worst, either: he had a massive ego, but he also had a lot of people stroking it. In 1975, he really was fielding calls from Burbank with propositions to replace Johnny Carson. His girlfriend Jacqueline Carlin was a model, literally (played in the movie by Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford's daughter). No, in the movie we meet Milton Berle, played by J.K. Simmons, who hangs around the SNL set after taping a show in the building. In one scene, Berle is hitting on Chevy's girlfriend Jacqueline, and … well, there's a clip if you want to see want to see what happens next:

    Yikes.
