Wood pellet options

With very limited options for wood pellets where delivery is required I have gone with balcas for the last few years. There price doubled since my first purchase with no signs of reducing and I think they have a bit of a monopoly. Currently just under 1000 euro for two tonne pallets same cost me 520e in 2021. I've seen a new company now shipping to the Republic called wood-pellets.Direct selling Pelkur pellets from Turkey, has anyone used these before and can recommend? Costs 840 for two tonne delivered to the Republic.

Cheapest I could get was €395/tonne pallet and that was a special offer for a weekend only.

    You could try Laois sawmills.

Bit the bullet and bought two tonne pallets from WoodPelletsDirect. It came in at 841 euro with exchange rate (720gbp), will report back when they arrive. Hopefully they are good quality as I have found balcas better than other brands I've picked up over the years.

Two pallets arrived today very efficient service and being honest an absolute pleasure to deal with. Can't say the same about balcas. Anyway it'll be a few months before I start to use the pellets so won't yet comment on their quality (although visually look top notch) but for now I can say WoodPellets.direct have been great.

Asking for a friend.. I assume the Balcas pellets are from Irish Softwoods.

What kind of wood are your new pellets made from and are they Uk or European made? Would you have noticed any performance difference in the past?

    Thank you.

Balcas are from the north using local or Scottish wood is what they say in their website. Pelkur pellets are Turkish per their website. Both say they are enplus A1 rated which means they are the highest quality. Balcas sell whiter pellets while the pelkur ones that arrived yesterday are brown in colour but not sure exactly what that means likely that only they are from different colour trees? I Won't be using the pellets hopefully for a couple of months so fingers crossed they give good heat with minimal ash.

Colour could be an indicator of different tar content, which is one of those lovely uncontrollable things about pellets that can make a mess of your system. Pellets all the way from Turkey… amazing how the eco-friendliness graph on pellets has only gone on to greater heights since I was cursed with them.

    Good luck.

Your comment about Balcas reminded me of the time that they banjaxed my front gate doing a delivery while I was out. Can't prove it was them as I didn't discover it till a few days later but I can't imagine what other than a heavy delivery truck could have pushed and bent an iron gate and gatepost.

There isn't a day that goes by that I'm not happy to have seen the back of it.

Just wanted to report back for anyone who may have been interested in wood-pellets.Direct now that I have burned through quite a few bags. Have to say the heat is better and the ash quantity seems less than the bags I bought from balcas for the last three years. They also burn cleaner and the stove is much easier clean using these pellets. Would definitely buy these again.

Hi colm82, I'm running my wood pellet stove for the first winter and those pelkur pellets are what I've gone with too but unfortunately they are quiet dusty in the bag, really small and seem to be crushed. Just thinking maybe

it's a bad batch. Having to hoover out the stove every day after only burning a bag.

I haven't seen that myself although I have an insert stove so can't access the hopper and pretty sure everything gets fed down into the stove regardless. I did see a couple of bags with smaller than balcas pellets but I'm not worried about their size so long as they burn well!

Hi …I have been buying Balcas pellets myself and yes they have doubled since i go the stove some years back..I am looking at woodpellets.direct also today they have a christmas deal of 347 pounds from NI to republic …delivered so am going to purchase…in the past months i have been looking at wood pellets from Europe but cant find a company who will deliver using PayPAL ..they want performa invoice etc…and money up front etc…..has anyone tried to order from Europe using "Paypal" …as if you purchase anything using "goods and services" tab your item is protected …..I was going to try nd get two tons (two pallets) to see if it would work….they average about 90 to 150 euros a ton ! ……regards

How did you get on with these through the winter Colm? Would you buy again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭Colm82

Being honest probably not, as much as it kills me to say it I think balcas were better quality. My flue got blocked this winter which it hadn't done before. That may or may not be related to the pellets. The bags did seem to be broken up into 'crumbs' at the bottom of each bag. So I think I'll be going back to balcas this winter which I think JULYSUPERSAVE25 works for 25e off each order until end of the month unless anyone has better recommendations?

The balcas generate good heat and seem to be good quality. We don’t buy them but ran out and bought a few bags thought they were really good. Think the trick is to get the pellet stove fully serviced once a year. Not cheap but essential maintenance.

Just checked the pellets off wood pellets direct are 690 gbp for two pallets which is roughly 800euro after conversion and charges. Balcas with the above discount is 890 euro (if ordered under two deliveries so you can get 25e of both orders) so up to each individual to decide if 100 euro is worth it, Colm
