I am currently on 500mb and paying 78 euro a month. 1gb is currently 80 euro a month so i am just wondering is it worth it? Would I have to get a new router and would Virgin have to call to change anything in the house??

It'll depend on what modem you currently have. It probably is capable of 1gb already. If it doesn't need swapping, then they just make the change on their back end, and worst case you'll need to restart the modem.

I've got the black one with the red tag on it far as I can remember. https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/existing-customer-deals/hub

Hub 4 according to that link.

I mean for an extra 2 euro you might as well, but do you feel any need to upgrade from 500Mb?

I found once internet speeds were getting into the hundreds of Mb, upgrades in speed started to become a bit redundant. For home users anyway.

You only need 25Mb for 4k streaming if I remember correctly. That's 20 devices simultaneously streaming 4K on 500Mb.

Yeah i was thinking along these lines but then taught well 2 euro for extra surely isnt a bad thing? Especially seeing as every second device in my house is connected to the Wifi including my two kids gear as well.

completely agree, currently on the 500mb pack, and theres just no need for it at all, we d easily run the house on much slower speeds, you d wanna be a very heavy user, multiple gamers, multiple 4k streamers etc, to truly need the high speeds….

For two euro I'd probably take it alright, particularly as everything you have there probably already supports it, so it's just a matter of them increasing your speed.

I remember back in the day when I first upgraded from 56k to 1Mb broadband, how fast it felt. Even when online gaming. I'm sure folks could do most of their browsing and even online gaming at 5-10Mb. Let alone 1000Mb.

You'd certainly need some household alright that would warrant the equivalent of streaming 4k on twenty devices at once. Maybe a small hotel. 😁

I'm sure it's probably only a matter of time though before we need that kind of bandwith in the future.

..ah speed upgrades are almost irrelevant at this stage, we simply dont need the speeds that are being offered, maybe when we all move towards 8k devices, will we truly need these speeds, but thats gonna be a while….

78 euro a month for 500Mb seems very steep.

Is it broadband only OP or is bundled with TV or phone? There are better deals available for broadband only

If you can swap the account into another name you’d be better off looking for a discounted offer off Virgin. We only pay a little over €50 for 500 Mb, tv and phone, availing of the half price offers each year.

Its just broadband by it self. Ive been with them years it's just went up over time. It went up by 3 euro or something recently. If I was a new subscriber I'd get it cheaper but I don't really wanna switch cause I've had issues with Sky and Eir in past.

Got 1gb BB for 40e for nine months, and 3 months at 80e,1 year contract with virgin.

Was coming out of previous contract and I said I was switching if I didn't get better deal.Retention team were easy to deal with,u should get same deal as me.

Would they do that swapping to my wife's name for example in the same household?

You should be looking for around 45/50 mark for 500Mb - shop around definitely.

Vodafone/pure telecom are other options if you are dead against sky/eir

Im happy enough to stay with Virgin for convience alone. Will have to look into seeing can i get a better deal though.

Last year I was offered 9 months at €35 and 3 at €70 for the 500mb service. Last month I renewed the contract for the year and stayed with 5000mb but got all 12 months at €35

So do u think if I rang them now and explained that I'm not happy with how high the rate is and im thinking of switching they would do a deal with me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 573 ✭✭✭gibgodsman

I am with Digiweb and pay €39.95 for 1gb and will for 12 months, then I will threaten to switch and get it at the same price for the next 12 months, and so on and so on, your paying nearly double that for half the speed…. I never understand why people dont shop around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,136 ✭✭✭✭How Soon Is Now

Rang them there got 1gb for 65 euro for the next 9 months then back to 80 for the last three months in a one year contract. Better then nothing I guess! Ill see what story is around then at the end of that year.

Reason I have stuck with Virgin for so long is because no matter where I live it seems none of the other rival companies offer speeds that Virgin do so I end up staying with the one place.

Yes, next time signup under your wife’s name and you can get the new customer offer.

For 500Gb to 1000Gb, I'd say if you have to ask then it won't make any difference to you at all.

Don't know what there at now but i ordered over the phone with them Tuesday Lunch time woman on the phone said they would send me another hub? So i still havent recieved anything speeds are still 500gb speeds. I rang them there while ago and got someone on the phone who didnt really understand what i was asking them and wanted to book a technician for me for this Sunday ffs. So i told her id get back to her….. Asked herself to turn the hub off at home and turn back on its still on same speeds as 500gbs speed. I'm gonna have to ring someone again and try find out what's going on. Is this normal?

Just to update on this what a **** joke. I've spoke to three different people today wasted both of my breaks in work waiting on the phone. Now of them could give me an actual answer as to what is up. The original woman last Tuesday gave me the wrong info I was never meant to be sent a new hub and this is the only reason I waited until now to see why the speeds had not changed as I taught I needed a new device first! So the last person I spoke with reset my hub over the phone now I'm not even getting 100mbs ffs. I was able to get just over 500gbs before I upgraded. They have me down for tech to call on the **** 7th of August. So that's just over two weeks from the original date I upgraded. I will have to check out everything when I get home this is absolute bullshit.
