Stickers on fruit?

Does the retailer need them, and what can be done about this problem? With stickers on fruit, people don't seem to pay attention to the fact that they're putting plastic into the compost bins.

If everyone made a point of taking off the sticker on the fruit item they're buying and sticking it onto the retailer's label for that section, maybe it would make them question it a little. That's what I do.

You can eat them,FSAI said a few years ago they're harmless. Obviously having a diet solely of them stickers might not be good for you in the long term.

They all break down in my compost bin. They're not plastic - unless we're at cross purposes as to what stickers you mean.

Usually stick it on the core when it's going into the bin although saying that, there's pink lady ones stuck in the most random places around here, think there's one on the steering wheel of the car…I definitely never eat them. Was thinking more about the glue leeching into the fruit tbh.

As other posters have mentioned, Pink Lady stickers are definitely plastic - small oval shaped stickers about 1.5cm on the long axis.

They don't break down in compost, I find them occasionally in my garden, when I've failed to remove the buggers before adding stuff to the compost bin 🙈

The glue will be food grade adhesive, the stickers however are chipped by the government to track your movement so don't eat them.

ones on avocados are often foil or metal backed

I don't think most people even think about it and just throw them in the compost.

Although it's the same with plastic teabags, sure all plastic is 'biodegradable'

Some are paper, some are plastic. Have a look at what's on the mandarins in your area and let me know… I've only ever seen plastic stickers on those.

He just doesn't want to miss out on the nutrients from the stickers because variety is healthy, but the all-sticker diet is not to be recommended, no matter how many TikTok infuencers say otherwise.
