Spare AM4 Bracket

    Hi Lads,

I'm doing a case upgrade including AIO and well it's not going great :-(

The AIO I'm replacing used its own mounting bracket, backplate and the new one uses the original and supplied one.

Unfortunately the AMD original backplate seems to have one damaged screw thread which means the new retainer won't scree in properly.

Does anyone here living in or around the south Dublin, Kildare area happen to have a spare one ?

Got sorted, found another retention bracket on another m/b I forgot I had. Part one of the build complete, It's a dual chamber PC with room for mini-itx on one side and the main rig on the other. I'll put up some photo when I'm finished the dual setup.

Part 2 completed...kind of !! Black screen on the startup. I suspect it's the ram. I got it in CEX, it's fast timing gaming ram I just need standard. I'll pop down to CEX return and exchange for hopefully something compatible.

Anyway here are some quick pics.

Second itx PC is an AIO thin itx running off a power brick. i5-1200T build with 500gb NVME. I'm planning to use it (assuming I can get it running 🤣) as an Emby and adblock server. It'll be replacing a HP i5-8500 system currently doing the job. Media will for the most part be streamed directly from Real dedrid servers using Rclone and Zurg to create a virtual storage drive from the RD servers so there's no for mass internal storage. I currently have about 90TB in my RD library!!!

All that said I'm going to reuse the old case which is fractal design Node 804 for a personal server in the 100TB plus range. Main board will be an old AMD fm2, fm1 system or AM1 using Open Media Vault or True NAS core.

At the moment only planning to use the server for 4K ISO files. But at 100TB it'll give me a few years before I need to expand. No plans to run my server for EMBY or Plex. I just can't get my head around dockers and all that stuff.

I built a test Nas with 8 500gb drives on an am3 system last week and have been testing various server solutions, OMV7 is very easy to setup and if just using for storage I can't see much difference between the various server solutions. Unraid seems good but limited in terms of storage options only one array and just 6 disks on the entry level one year package. I'm not sure it offers much more that True NAS once you get the hang of Linux. Pro version of unraid isn't worth the price for me as I only plan on storage use. That might change as I play around with Linux a bit more

I got to CEX. Returned the ram and was refunded the 35 euro vocucher i spent on it. I got new ram, 8GB instead of the 16GB i had but it cost just 12 euro. Got home installed the ram and still black screen. I removed mobo, I wasn't too happy with the cpu cooler during the build, it felt to me it was causes too much flex on the board when screwing it down. I backed off the retainer screws and tried the mobo outside of the case. Success !!! it is working, I probably should have checked cooler/mobo flex before I returned the 16GB ram but all is good now and I don't really need 16GB of ram. Downloading windows now , hopfelly the install go smooth , then I'll start the NAS build.

The major benefit that unRAID offers is exactly that. It's not a RAID. Adding disks is really simple and because it's all managed in software it will work with any connection. TrueNAS is free and the performace is better but adding disks and more storage is a little more involved. unRAID is completely unforgiving as long as your parity drive size is equal to or bigger than any other disk.

OMV7 and can do same with SnapRAID with MergerFS installed.

Windows 11 with drivepool and snapraid can do the similar.

Snapraid is pretty amazing you set up your parity disk or disks depending on the level you're happy with. Just like in unraid you can use different size disks once the parity disks is the largest.

True but then you are just emulating unRAID with a poorer UI, smaller community and less add-ons/plug-ins/docker images. Of course you are paying for those with unRAID so that's up to you to make that call if that is worth the price.

For the moment my Nas will just be for storage, I just want a huge network drive to run media from. I can't quite get my head around dockers and plugins on NAS solutions.

I'll play around with them a bit more on a second machine or a VM. It's all very interesting but for the moment I'm happy to have a dumb NAS until I learn a bit more.

I'm a currently using an i5-8500 HP SFF to run Emby, an adblock service and wiregaurd. I have a very nice setup there that's very easy for me to migrate to new mini-itx system that's built in my new dual system setup. I'll be migrating over next week.

Anyway I've built the dumb server, It is up and running with 16gb ram and an old FM2 A6-6400K. The mobo has 8 SataIII connections and gigabyte lan.

I'll be adding the storage later tonight and tomorrow .

Snapraid and MergeFS are plugins for OMV. You are already using them on a NAS solution. And no need to setup another box to mess around with Docker or VMs. OMV can do that as well with the use of plugins. And worth looking into as containers are a very powerful tool to have in your armory and you'd be surprised how simple it is to use.
