Buying a Skoda Octavia

Looking to buy a family car and a few people have recommended Octavias for boot space and reliability.

Don't really know much about cars tbh.

Mostly city driving with a cross-country trip every couple of weeks. (So I guess Petrol is the way???)

Any obvious reason why I shouldn't buy this car?

If they give you warranty don’t worry and buy if you like the car.

What kind of warranty do you get with that particular car? Theres one here for €3,500 less, 20k km more on the clock. Might suit you better to have the extra cash in your pocket if your doing low enough mileage

Same car slightly more miles , 3.5 k cheaper , know nothing about ZuCar and I'm sure their warranty will be less comprehensive but you have a 3.5k head start

This is great. At least I know I'm on the right track.

Great suggestions with the car in Drogheda. Originally drawn to my first choice because it's in Galway city where I'm based. Drogheda is a trek but definitely worth it for the difference in price.

Is there any logic in waiting till next month when people would trade-in to get the 242 reg? There might be more options?
On the other hand, I might be able to knock a few quid off buying in June because it's the end of the business quarter/half.

No, not really much point in waiting. Prices aren’t going to fall dramatically, and it takes a bit of time for cars to be auctioned off and prepared from when they are traded in

It annoys me that these Octavia Soleils were €26k new, €21k for a 4 year old one seems expensive. They’re a decent enough spec, they had €3k of extras for an extra €500 back then.

It’s actually grand. Not a sports car, but not slow either. To put some context on it:

Mk3 Octavia 1.0, 115bhp and 200nm torque

Mk2 Octavia 1.6 MPI 102bhp and 148nm torque

Corolla 1.33 100bhp and 132nm torque.

Mk2 Avensis 1.6 VVT-i 109bhp and 150nm torque

The turbocharger compensates for the smaller engine. The Mk3 Octavia is also a relatively light car.

I had one of those Octavia 1.0 TSI and it had plenty of power. Lovely car to drive. 6 speed gearbox

There's also MK3 1.4 TSIs with 150bhp which were decent but they're fairly rare, everyone went with diesels or the smaller petrol engine.

Are the Seat 1.5 TSI engines reliable?

Reason I ask is I think I read somewhere that the VW 1.4 TSI was not a great engine and should be avoided.

The 1.4 TSI comes in many forms and many different engine codes. 122bhp and 140bhp CAX is fine. 160bhp and 180bhp CAV and CTH engines are best avoided. They are twin charged and are known for loosing compression

not sure if they fixed it, but make sure the rear wiper works; octavias were famous for the motors failing. i've had two, and it failed on both, but with the caveat that the newer of those two was 2012.

Unfortunately not. Its a relatively new engine so I don’t know much about it. I haven’t heard any major reports on it tho.

There were big issues with the manual 1.5s being very jerky when cold. I’m not sure if/when they resolved that.

Yeah, I think it was a term referred to as kangarooing. Apparently it was caused by a software bug.

I test-drove that car and all went well until we got back to the dealership. Couldn't put the car in reverse without grinding the gears. They acknowledged that it's not right and that they would have it fully serviced and ready to go before a purchase.

But it's spooked me and I feel repairing a car before you buy it is not a good place to start from. Even with the 2 year warranty, it makes me wonder what else might pop up.

My Partner has the 1.5 150bhp engine in a Karoq. Fine engine with decent power and economical enough with the 6 speed box.

I wouldn't like any less power in it to be honest.

No issues with kangarooing or anything. Hers is a 222.

as a previous owner of an (old diesel!) high mileage ex taxi Octavia estate, was built like a tank, never an issue.
