Question on a bar used on farm

Strange question.,

Years ago, when we would put wooden stakes down in grass, we would make a hole in the ground first with a steel bar, said steel bar must be 60 years old this stage (or more)

Was just a heavyish enough steel bar about 4ft tool with a bit of a pointy end, crude enough piece of equipment (think hay knife: ))

you would ram it in to the ground a few times and move it around and make a hole for the wooden stake

Anyone know what this bar is called?

that's the one !! Thats what the father always called it, just couldn't recall, for years I thought he was saying crow bar and was always confused :) cause a crow bar is a different thing

Still have our old crow bar here in the shed. **** thing is near 6ft long and near 2 inch thick. Must be 10-15kg. My granduncle used to work on the railways and it was used for pulling the nails out of oak sleepers. All I know it near broke my back when I was a gasun. Still get PTSD looking at the bastard.

Nail bar is some made up nonsense, the correct term is crowbar. You will find crowbar in any dictionary, not so 'nail bar'. A jemmy is a short crowbar when used for illegal purposes.

Whatever it's called the solid steel ones are getting scarcer as health and safety policies deem them too dangerous as a worker night accidentally drive one through his foot.

The approved "safe" versions are made of fibreglass with steel tips and weigh next to nothing making them virtually useless!
