France doesn’t do supercars or massive SUVs, that’s where you get high Co2 these days. Even those sort of cars have mainly gotten around that by using hybrid technology.
Stellantis and Renault are volume car manufacturers selling ordinary cars, so of course they are producing efficient models.

I think its around €39k, plus VAT of €11k, plus VRT of €35k. I could be wrong but I think thats it.

It is a Yaris though. And it shares the front & rear lights, wing mirrors and shark fin antenna with a standard Yaris.

They are the equivalent of 31k in Japan. So you could have two and a 20 grand holiday for the price we pay. Loads of them over there too when I was there last year. But sure it's basically an F1 car here - environment killing rocket ship and well worth 85k!

A golf R uses the same chassis and body etc as a golf.

Afaik the GR yaris was originally supposed to be WRC car and Toyota needed to meet WRC's homologation rule where they had to make a certain amount available to buy.

It has to look like a standard road car and they chose the Yaris but everything chassis wise etc is a completely different car I believe, including certain body panels and the frame below them, I could be wrong - someone will know more details

The body shell shares very few panels with an ordinary Yaris apparently. Engine, suspension, gearbox, 4wd, diffs etc. are unique.

Golf R starts with a standard bodyshell.

No comparison with the Golf and its GTI/R versions as these are in essence the same cars with just different engine and suspension set ups (and drivetrain for the R). The Yaris GR is only really sold due to rally homologation where a manufacturer has to produce a certain amount of road version of the race car. The car is different from the ground up with close to no body panels and little internal structures being the same leading to different width, length, height, wheelbase followed by ground up suspension and drivetrain, interior layout, a completely different engine, two Torsen limited-slip diffs and a whole host of other things.

As you can imagine I'm a bit of a fan, and were I to be anywhere else but Ireland would seriously consider it for a weekend back road blaster.

People, especially nowadays think having high horsepower is all you need in car. It's how the power is handled and delivered. I'd say a GR Yaris is much more than to drive than those 1000+ HP M3's that you see on Youtube

No if you read up on the yaris GR It's made to look like a yaris but it's bespoke hence why it's so expensive it's not like a golf R which is a Golf with a fancy engine and suspension

What bugs me is that they had a clean sheet and didn’t have to use any Yaris parts.
They could have made something amazing as opposed to a car that drives great but is otherwise crap. A modern day Impreza/Evo basically. But they didn’t have the constraints Subaru/Mitsubishi has.

Lets get back to the topic: VRT is completely out of hand and there is no justification for it. Remove VRT or set VRT at the base yet. My personal opinion would be remove VRT completely, and increase the taxation on fuel instead.

the logic of VRT is that the more expensive the car is the more you pay, the more Co2 it produces the more you pay.
Our minister for transport is the leader of the Green Party.

EVs up to €40k are exempt from VRT, beyond that level they still pay very little VRT. There’s an SEAI grant of €3500 off a new EV.

Fuel is already heavily taxed.

Another point they never sold the GR Yaris in US. They went with a GR Corolla over there with more power than the GR Yaris(first gen model). Same engine though just with more power to make up for the extra weight.

I watched a few reviews a few months back and the facelift is well worth it according to reviewers but maybe not in Ireland or France due to us both being ripped off with such mental pricing.

I didn't say it is not a Yaris. I am saying that the argument "It's a Yaris" is not valid, as this is a great hot hatchback. There is a huge difference between the regular Yaris and this. But sure, it's a Yaris…

Its yaris by name and look only - they cheapened it somewhat by doing so - as already said its basically a rally car for the road made to look like a yaris .

There seem to be a couple of special edition models available as well.

GR Yaris Special Edition Rovanpera or Ogier - €121,560. Metallic or Pearlescent paint are extra on top of that.

Base price on a Yaris GR Manual is €42.258.54. 23% VAT on that amount then €33,317 of VRT due to the 197g emisisons.

Someone, somewhere will get them passed as a commercial - there's some of the previous models knocking around in Ireland without back seats, and paying €333 per year road tax.
