Tractor 4WD question

just when going field work in wet land should a tractor 4WD switch be left on all the time? Would that help to avoid doing damage to the land or would it do damage to the tractor’s 4WD system leaving it on all the time while say spreading fertiliser ?

Or should the 4WD only be using when going through a wet spot that you might get stuck in then switched off again ?

Fine to let it on all the time once you're staying under like 12mph. Modern tractors you barely notice it on. Older ones it's noisy and greatly increases your turning circle.

If you know your fields/wet spots I'd turn it off in the dry areas and especially when coming to the headlands as your turning circle is greatly reduced. If the headlands are wet then leave it engaged and reverse up a bit to make the turn for your next pass.

Gillespy got ahead of me with a similar response.

some 4wds have 4 wheel A, I was told this was the auto version you have on when in a field it kicks in whenever it’s needed automatically (for circumstances like you described)
I know very little about tractors so I could be completely wrong but it’s what I was told.

thanks for all the replies- will leave it in 4WD all the time when doing field work given the current conditions for the time being 😅
