Hi folks was having an issue with a Clutch i thought it was slipping, Garage looked at it and have said in there opinion the Clutch is ok but the issue is the Flywheel and needs to be skimmed, that to put a New Clutch in im going to have the same issue again, Is this a better option than buying a new Flywheel

think 270,000 and its had 3 clutches, this garage is saying that clutchs are been put on but the issue is the flywheel and if you put another clutch in same thing will happen ina year because of the flywheel, unless the other garages i went to didnt want o touch the flywheel , its a toyota corolla and im told if the fly wheel had to be replaced it would have to be an oroiginal Toyota

Is it a petrol or diesel?

270k and its had 3 clutches - thats not that bad really depending on whos driving it 90,000 kms per clutch.

Generally speaking if its a petrol you never really have to change a flywheel ever unless its severely worn, teeth chipped on it etc.

A diesel - if its dual mass will need replacement more often.

Sounds a lot for 270,000! My car had it's first clutch at 310,000 kms.

At that mileage, put a clutch and flywheel in it, especially if you plan on keeping it.

I’m on 280k and on original clutch. If it’s had 3 replacement clutches, that’s 4 altogether which is way more than usual.

We dont know whether its a petrol or diesel.

A corolla could have had the balls driven out of it by a previous owner especially if its a 1.4 petrol. Ive had 350k on the same clutch yet Ive had customers with 60 - 70 k from new on a second clutch - we need more info but I stand by my previous post - petrol doesnt need a new flywheel / diesel 100% does.

Anyone who needs a clutch replaced after 60-70k doesn't know how to drive a manual.

Dual mass flywheels fail for the same reason, poor use. I've two diesels, 260k and 160k still on original clutch and DMF.

I haven't heard of slipping because of an unevenly surfaced flywheel though which is what the OP seems to have been told. This is assuming the garage has actually opened everything up to diagnose?

Clutch is a consumable item...we'll be comparing brakes and tyre wear next.

  • Lads you’re arguing it’s not normal to need clutch replaced or it is but without a clue how the cars been driven.

If they’re constantly riding it wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve had 3-4 in 270k but if you look after it you can get to 270k and beyond with OG clutch.

Maybe let the OP get back with more info before ye decide on who’s right or wrong. 🤣

  • Personally I’ve a civic with og clutch 250k.

had a Qashqai on 370k still OG clutch

Ford fiesta had clutch and flywheel (it was diesel) replaced at just under 200k.

when I was doing lessons my instructor said his car is on the factory clutch with nearly 450k!! 2012 auris. Couldn’t believe it especially considering learners use the car! He would get really vexed if you used it wrong though.
