Trouble with a 14 year old BMW316

I’ve taken it to two garages and they can’t find fault. The car seems to have a problem generally within the first few minutes of a journey first thing in morning or on way home after work. It’s always after dropping down the gears and when I’m picking up again the car almost dies and the revs act as if they’re being limited by something. This doesn’t happen every time but tends to come and go, it hasn’t happened for a couple of weeks but did start again yesterday. Antone any idea what it might be?

Coming out of work today the car actually cut out completely when I tried to accelerate in second gear.

Have you had it scanned for any fault codes?

Might be something with fuel supply, as you accelerate and the car needs more fuel the system isn't capable of delivering more.

If diesel it would be worth checking the fuel filter first (could be clogged up)

as well as what I said above, sometimes when I’m in 3rd/4th gear and take foot off accelerator the car shudders a small bit, this doesn’t happen very often though.

That sounds like a symptom of a failing throttle position sensor, but seems related to fueling anyway. I'd be surprised if a car with those issues hasn't got any stored codes at all.

I think there was a small rubber hose that perishes in around / under the air filter and this little hose would cause grief. if you replace it , it will take a few miles for the vacuum to build up and then should be ok.
