Mesh Hay/Straw Rack

Hi Guys, I'm using the racks below to feed straw to calves. The square mesh holes seem very small and I think its affecting the amount they're eating. any thoughts. I always thought they looked small but seen them being used on some of the calf rearing houses on internet so thought they must be ok.

I've been using similar for a few years and hadn't noticed any problems with them. If the holes are bigger are they more likely to pull it through and walk it into the ground?

I usually break out the hay so it's fine and loose before putting it in the racks. Might help them pull it through a bit more for you
