Hi guys, quick question about something I can't figure out. My NCT is out in October this year and my car is 141, registered in June 2014, so any new cert will only be valid for 1 year. If I book my NCT for a date before June will I be covered for another 1 or 2 years? It'd be fierce handy to wriggle another 2 year cert out of them

My car was 10 years old in 2018 and they actually wrote to me to advise me that if I did a test more than 90 days before the 10th anniversary, I would get a two year cert.

In every case, if you do the test with less than 90 days remaining on your current cert, the cert you get will be the same as if you did the test on the day the old cert expired. So in your case, if you do the test in August, September or October, you will get a one year cert which will expire in October 2025. But if you volunteer for an early test (more than 90 days remaining on your current cert.) and do it before the car's 10th anniversary, you will bring forward the date for future tests but they will give you a two year cert, because your car will not yet be 10 years old. So if you do the test at any stage between now and the car's 10th anniversary, you will get a cert which expires in Feb. 2026.

Unless the rules have changed in the past few years, that's my understanding of where you stand with a car that's coming up to 10 years old.

I thought it was something like that but I've been seeing conflicting information online. Some say its a closed loophole now or something, and others aren't, it's very hard to get the right info.

I checked the NCT website and they seem to agree with what I said.

    • If your car is more than 4 years and less than 9 years and 9 months old and
    • Vehicle passes more than 90 days ahead of a mandatory test then ..
    • Next test date is reset to the second anniversary of this voluntary test

In other words, you will get a two year cert.

Technically, the Covid extension means that you should be able to do a test on the day before your car's 10th anniversary because your current cert has more than 90 days to run but I wouldn't risk it. Do the test in February or early March and get a two year cert.

See No. 15 in the list of FAQs here ..https://www.ncts.ie/1123/

Excuse my ignorance, but how is your NCT out in October if the car was registered in June?

The car was registered in June of 2014 and the current NCT cert is valid until October this year

Fair enough. I thought NCT expiry was always the date of car registration, regardless of then the test was taken

Just for my own clarity, I’m a bit slow, we’ve a 141, first registration was in May 2014, due to the Covid extension it’s current nct expires 14/8/24 so if I get it tested before May 17 2024, I’m good for two years?

You need to do it more than 90 days before the birthday of the car. Get booking now. Your expiry will be 2 years from the test date.

Wasn’t there a grace period because of Covid? I think all dates were pushed out.

Managed to book one for Saturday, emailed NCT last week looking for clarity on the 2 year thing but unsurprisingly I've still heard nothing back. Just gonna change it and see what happens.

I have another question if anyone can help. A wing mirror took a hit last week while parked up and now the I can't move it using the buttons inside the car. I can still adjust it by hand though? Would that be a fail? A rubber seal on a back door is starting to come off too and stick out when it's closed, I'm assuming that's fine though.

Little confused here... Have I missed the boat?

My test is out in May and my car was registered back on 15th March 2014. So I'd have to have done the test 90 days before the 15/3/24 to get the a two-year cert?

    Is that right?
