Type of soil, plough?

I have a field leased,it’s a very wet field on top but if you drive into it with a tractor and load of dung the wheels will sink about 3 inches and then it’s just solid ground, the owner, a family member is willing to pay for a good bit of the reseeding if I’m interested

Im just wondering is there a pan underneath the soil and this is why it’s holding the water? I have no experience of dealing with a pan but people here have discussed it, so would ploughing sort this problem?

I must do that but to walk it you would think it’s a swamp but after 4 inches it’s solid ground

"Solid ground" could be anything including rock - nobody here can tell for you. You need to dig down in a number of spots around the field to be sure.

Definitely not rock, you would find slig if you went down far enough

Not sure what the term slig means. Whatever it is the cause of your field beubg waterlogged, we have no way of knowing apart from what you're telling us.

There could be many reasons why it is waterlogged. You've a heavy gley soil e.g. Cavan/Leitrim area or you're in the Shannon Callows or you simply have a high water table.

What are adjoining fields like?

Get someone to plough it. They should have a good setup and know what to do.

The fields left and right to it are very good dry fields,the field in front of it is a wet field
