I recently had an engine go on a Skoda Superb (2.0L tdi). Mechanic sourced an engine via a breakers yard from a Golf. Cost was almost 6 grand all in (turbo reconditioned, new timing belt and water pump, etc) - although I would say if you sourced the engine yourself then shopped around to get it fitted, you'd get it done cheaper. Took almost 3 months to find a suitable engine too.

To source one, start calling every breakers you can find, for example:

    https://www.traynors.co.uk/

    https://vagparts.ie/

Or use one of the aggregate services, like:

    https://www.findapart.ie/

    https://partfinder.ie/

Don't rely on the stock listed on anyone's website; they're always out of date. Talk to them. Engine will be snapped up fast. Also, you have no guarantee that the engine you're buying has the milage that they claim it had, or is in good condition. They'll usually give you a very short warranty (a week or so), with the idea of it being enough time to fit and make sure it's running properly, but after that, you're on your own, the warranty will only cover the engine itself, not labour (which will be doubled if the replacement engine needs to come out again because it's not running).

The likes of Kilkock Car Dismantlers have loads of 1.6 TDI engines. I think prices are around €1,000 or so and it costs about €500 to have it fitted to your car. I’ve bought VAG 1.2 engines for €700 or so.

Anyway this isn’t something you should even be considering if your car is starting and driving. What mileage is on your car and what year is it?

Engine refurb might be better option

Thanks all - I was just wondering if it was an economic option

in the event of engine trouble but it seems refurb might be better.
