HVO100 diesel

    Just filled up at my local station and they had HVO100 (bio diesel of sorts) and diesel side by side. Tank labeled but not the nozzles. Same price.

    In a panic I checked online and my car is a Seat (VW group) Euro 6 diesel engine so it's compatible. But nothing about older vehicles. It has a label on the tank to check with manufacturers site. Not much help for older stuff. Are we going to see loads of breakdowns with this stuff ?

    Has anyone been using this and tell me what's the economy like or is it the same as the stuff years ago for the Saab 93's that drank fuel with the bio stuff in it. I know two people personally that told me that exact story.

    Where did you fill up? I put some in my car for the first time tonight at the Circle K Carlow off the M9, was 1.98 per litre, so a tad bit more expensive than regular diesel.

    Newbridge McLoughlin's. Exact same price as standard diesel.

    I've used it for almost 6,000 km in a Euro 6 VW group diesel with no issues. The stuff that the Saabs and others ran on back in the day was E85 which was used by flexifuel cars with larger injectors and different mapping. HVO has most of the characteristics of fossil diesel with a small difference in density and viscosity. Mine uses roughly 5% more fuel on HVO but feels as lively and as quiet as if it was running on premium diesel. The engine oil is reckoned to stay a bit cleaner as less soot is produced which is also good for the EGR and DPF.

    Good to hear Euro 6 are ok. Any idea how they are in the old 1.9 TDI Vag from 03 and a 1.6 TDI from 2010. So that's Euro 3 and 4 engines.

    I used it for a few fills in a euro 5.

    I found my fuel usage significantly worse. It was about 10-15% less out of the tank on a 50:50 split with regular diesel. Now, it could equally just be Certa fuel rather than the HVO diesel.


    I had paid 1.81 for it and then filled up another station normal diesel for 1.69 a few days later (it was still 1.81 at the station). Couldn't justify 12c a litre different with 10-15% less range out of it.

    They are fine. It's a drop in replacement for diesel. Older engines particularly from VW aren't certified because they are too **** cheap to do it, not because they are not compatible.

    HVO is less energy dense afaik than DERV but has excellent lubricity and smoke characteristics so your engine will run better but thirstier.

    I have been running my 3.0d BMW for almost 6,8 tanks now on HVO. The car runs amazingly sweet. Much higer mpg, almost no smoke at the tail pipe, and car definately pulls alot harder and smoother. the cetane in HVO is in the region of 75plus, while regular B7 diesel is only 55 cetane

    Does anyone know if HVO from the smaller fuel retailers is from a common source and what that source is? Presumably Neste supply some if not all of it

    Circle K have rolled out a few more locations: Kill South, Coolshannagh Monaghan, CityNorth J7 M50 alongside the existing ones at Dublin Port, Cashel, Fermoy and M9 Carlow.

    It's strange that TOP don't have hvo at their stations, since they have the same owners as the Whitegate refinery.

    Went to the Kill South one at the weekend and it is only for HGV's, the nozzle is too big to fit a car.

    That's a pity as the Circle K HVO pumps at Junction 5 M9 are located in the HGV area but still fit standard cars, as do the AdBlue pumps. They mustn't have standard setups on their forecourts

    I'm using HVO 100 in my Mercedes and it deffo runs sweeter and quieter. Its expensive at Circle K outlets which kinda takes the good out of trying to be green.

    I filled up today today, HVO was 166.⁴ , & regular diesel was 166.⁹ , at the same station.


    It's price seems to vary

    Up to till recently HVO was 187.⁹

    20¢ reduction since last week

    You'll be Grand.


    If you are nervous, use a 50:50 mix


    But if you just fill from empty, you won't have a problem.

    I used it for months in my 2012 520d n47 and it was grand, had 0 issues with it. Now using it in my 2012 A6 and same, not a bother.

    Whatever about the 2010, you could pour SVO let alone HVO100 in and it would be fine.

    i dunno about it being odourless.. other than that.


    I'm running it in a F10 n47 for almost a year with zero problems, and no noticeable difference in mpg.

    The only issue, is none of my fuel cards will work with HVO.


    Lately certa have been price matching diesel with HVO, so I'm getting a higher cetane fuel, with less ash (increased dpf life) for the same money .

    Looking forward to certa rolling it out in more forecourts, the closest one to me is liffey valley, which isn't too bad as I can just pop in the before I head to Waterford.

    I used to use circle k for it with my fuel card, but couldn't justify the additional 20c per litre so switched to certa.

    Haven't been able to test fuel consumption in my Audi yet as I have an issue the the thermostat being stuck open and causing more fuel burn, but even at that I am getting about 7.5l/100km on a 400km round trip to Waterford, so hoping that will go down when fixed.

    How would this stuff work with vans such as Renault Nissan from about 2020 onwards? Is there really better mpg or is it just the eco friendly aspect?

    Fuel economy is much the same, I've not noticed any different, except with milesplus, which seems to give better mpg.

    But I can get hvo for the same or cheaper than regular diesel, and the knowledge that it's higher cetane, and less soot, so better for the original dpf on 250k+ km.
