5 months in hospital on illness benifit €98, lost everything.

I am just out of hospital after 5 months and I am raging at the SW. I was on Job Seekers allowance but as soon as I went into the hospital I asked my 80y.o mother to notify the welfare office so that my payments wouldn't be interrupted. Instead, they put me on Illness Benefit and told me to get on to the Community Welfare Officer to top it up. I went from €220 per week to €98 per week. i lost the Fuel Allowance, Christmas bonus and everything else.

I got rejected by the CWO because I was in hospital and was getting more than the €40 "comfort money" that it gives out. The attitude was that I was in the hospital and had no bills to pay, and I was getting 3 square meals a day in a 5-star hospital. The only 5 star thing about the last 5 months was the care and attention of the hospital staff who kept me alive and helped me recover. the rest was needles into my spine—groin, neck and just about everywhere else while I learned how to walk again.

I am now in a position where I can't repay my family for all of the travel and stuff that they got for me, I can't get Christmas presents and I have to get my car nct and back on the road. After everything I have been through I just alternate between feeling like going mental in some office or just burying my head in despair. I mean what sort of person thinks that anyone can live on €98 a week?

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to try and get any resolution to my money problems or has faced a similar situation?

So you were in hospital for months at the states expense I assume and your complaining that the state wouldn’t also pay you €220 per week on top of your hospital stay .Ridiculous.

DSP don't put anyone on IB, you apply.

Fuel Allowance is not paid with Illness Benifit

I've never heard the term Comfort Money.

It is correct if in Hospital you no longer qualify for JSA whilst incapable of work.

There is NO resolution that DSP will help you with, but you could apply for ENP which is means tested.
