For those in the know can you look at this picture and tell me what you think. OK, so I have a drain that carries the waste water from the bathroom sink that goes into the drain outside, lately I was getting a bad smell in the drain when someone was using the sink... it was gross, anyway I got busy trying to clean the sink pipes (drain unblocker etc) anyway after all my effort I discovered this unsightly bio hazard looking gunk on the drain cover outside where the waste water would flow into. I imagine this is the source of the smell, please tell me your opinion good people, brace yourself it looks absolutely disgusting

it's horrible stuff alright, toothpaste and hair and I don't know whatever. I hate clearing it out.

I regularly clean off what I reckon is hair/shampoo/soap mix from the drain cover and from the drain in the shower. I clean it out, pour boiling water down and occasionally some bleach

Need to do the one in the shower every month or so. Outside one lasts a little longer before needing doing.

It's a complete mystery to me how the hell the pipes can do whatever they do to make that mess. I nearly threw up when I saw the gunk, it looked like fish guts how in the world does it go like that. I hope that is the lot as it is quite a fair amount I think. Disgusting 🤢

its a combination of slime moulds and bacteria growing on the nutrients left from your hand wash shampoos and shower gels

Exactly, it's the natural process to break-down soaps and oils and proteins. It does seem excessive though, I'd almost wonder if the kitchen or dishwasher drain is also plumbed in there?
