VRT relief for EV's imported from Northern Ireland

I started looking at 2022 and 2023 EV's while looking at hybrids up the North and their VRT rates (no customs or vat)

Several EV's came back at zero VRT.

Minister states

that, until the end of 2023, electric vehicles can avail of relief on VRT. Battery electric vehicles with an OMSP of below €40,000 are entitled to a VRT reduction of up to €5,000, which has the effect of reducing their VRT to zero. A tapered relief applies for battery electric vehicles with an OMSP of between €40,000 and €50,000. There is no relief for higher value vehicles.

2024 and 2025 this tapers off again

I am looking at importing a 2023 BMW 530e xDrive M Sport 4dr Auto. Car sold new in Belfast. Now it is more than 6 months old and has more than 6,000 miles

VRT is 5k

Am I correct in thinking that there is no customs or vat on this car?

I think you are right, Northern Ireland continues to be treated as part of the EU under the trade agreement. This means vehicles imported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland have to go through customs and may have customs duties applied to them. If you buy a vehicle from Northern Ireland, you do not have to make a customs declaration. But you must have proof that a customs declaration was made when the vehicle arrived in Northern Ireland from Great Britain (if applicable).

If it’s currently registered YL72 MYD ? It’s showing as having been registered in Sheffield in late February using a free check on www.checkcardetails.co.uk Also showing out of tax since September. More likely a former UK car now for sale in N.I

Considering the details given, that car is for sale at bavarian and is on a uk reg not a NI reg.

Be very careful.

Salesmen will tell you it is owned by the pope if they thought it would get them the sale.

Also, they don't appear to sell to republic as a general policy from what ive seen. Twice queried cars and twice came back with no longer available.

That iX would probably work out about €9K cheaper than anything similar listed in the South. Colour is a bit marmite though. If you’ve a trade in to shift, a lot of the potential €9K saving could evaporate on you.

That iX is priced really well - landed here for about 62k. You wouldn’t get a new ID4 with that spec for 62k

Over the next 3 years I will save about €9,000 euro in fuel compared to the 530e so it really puts it in budget.

I think Burgundy was more fashionable in 2006 than it is now. If I was spending that much cash, I’d hold out for a colour I’d want. Would you not try to beat down an Irish dealer ? They should be very glad to see an iX going out the gate.

Saw it earlier, it’s a sticker price, that’s why I suggested trying to beat down the dealer. It also boils down to the cost to change if you’ve a trade in.

But the Irish dealer will typically want 10k on the trade in and 10k dearer on the sticker price so I'd imagine it would be easy enough sell his trade in on donedeal for something better than 20k under dealer price no matter what the trade in is.

Yes normal. I got 3 EV’s from uk before Brexit and VRT was €0

Gov have extended this until 31st Dec 2025

Electric vehicles and motorcycles

Series production passenger cars or commercial vehicles (VRT categories A and B) that are:

powered only by an electric motor
and
registered before 31 December 2025

are eligible for relief from VRT up to a maximum amount of €5,000.

Vehicles with an Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of up to €40,000 will be granted relief of up to €5,000. Vehicles with an OMSP of greater than €40,000 but less than €50,000 will receive a reduced level of relief.

Reliefs have been removed for any electric vehicles above €50,000.

I spoke to 2 dealers selling iX here and the most they would budge was 2k.

I don't know how they can afford to keep 70k cars long term parked on the forecourt.

I found another 530e in the UK, blue with cream leather and revenue are saying it's 9% VRT but the cars log book says 49 cO2

They can’t but some dealership chains like Bolands or Joe Duffy often have silly inhouse rules around stock prices. May not be able to budge until a particular vehicle is in stock for more than 120 days or whatever. It could then suddenly be advertised for €10K less after a quarterly sales meeting or whatever. Equally it could disappear out to the trade just to move it on. Might be worth getting to speak to the Sales Manager or Brand Manager rather than a sales advisor.
