Energy monitor options

Hi all, i want to get some energy monitoring in place. For reference house is a A3 BER fully electric house and we are EV drivers, using circa 15,000 units annually.

Plan to get solar next year.

At the moment i am looking at the following:

Shelly EM - would need a couple i think, one to do the main feed, one for the HP and one for the car charger at least

Emporia Smart home - can monitor 16 circuits , looks a tight install in an irish CU

Something more straight forward that just monitors overall usage like an Efergy.

I assume all need an electrician to fit? on that basis any reason not to go with the Emporia? and is it an easy enough job for a sparks?

If you need to open your consumer unit, it's into electrician territory.

The efengy one, could be put in your meter cupboard to monitor house use.

But once you want to monitor other circuits your gonna need to open the consumer unit.

Another aspect is how you want to handle the data, eg home assistant yourself or one from one of the companies and their apps.

Ok so the efergy can go into the meter cabinet ? Do they still sell them all I can find now is the new version which seems similar to emporia .

ideally data would go into home assistant but not a deal breaker

Actually no, I thought it was wireless like the owl.

If looking for home assistant, I'd be leaning much more towards Shelly or emontx 4 as it's much more open. (And local)

Is there any that is self install in the cabinet ?

Not that I know of.. there used to be the owl but it's old now and quite out of date. Especially if looking to log in home assistant.

Also to have an accurate measurement it needs a voltage reference (which the owl doesn't have, can't measure below 100w, or direction)

Big fan of the auld ShellyEM and Home Assistant, you are opening your consumer board and doing a small bit of fiddling so if you are not comfortable doing this then you might not be for you. But they integrate with HA brilliantly

Can I use this to monitor 4 circuits ? Is the fact it’s 16amp per channel an issue ?

This is what I have Shelly EM + 2x 50A Clamp - Shelly EM + 120A Clamp - All products - Products - Shelly I have three of them logging 6 circuits (I ordered two but they sent me 3 by mistake result!) These ones are small and you should be able to squeeze them in to your consumer box. You can select either with 120A or 50A CT clamps.

That Shelly PRO EM does look good alright, nice and neat job, and you can get ethernet connection as well which is a bonus. Sometimes the wifi drops in and out on just one of my Shellys for maybe a few hours couple times a year. I have ethernet at my board and would love to have them hardwired. Dont get me wrong they are solid and its very rare that I get a dropped signal and thats more to do with WiFi generally than the shelly Id Say

For your main ESB incomer you should have something over 50Amps at least. If you have an EV and heat pump you could be pulling 50A÷ easy enough at times.

I doing the same as you at the moment. i was recommended the Tuya Energy monitor, Its the same as the Shelly but costs only 25 euro delivered.
