Britain's hardest man and one of the hardest men in the world in his pomp. Had nearly 4000 fights and reportedly never lost one on the cobbles.

I've heard some of his supporters say would've taken out Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis in their peak but I watched some of his unlicensed boxing fights and thought technically it was poor. He's got super quick hands for his height tough.

I remember seeing him fight Roy Shaw on YouTube…. in fairness Roy was several inches shorter than, maybe even a foot shorter then Lenny but he still had pedigree in the unlicensed fighting… for a big man and an older man, the raw power and speed of McClean, especially his hands… it was unreal… I don’t know enough about boxing to comment on the technical aspects of it but Shaw was gamey, a legitimate east end gangster, zero fear whatsoever, however he was brutalised….

fight from about 18 minutes… Shaw literally almost gets his head knocked off him…

His supporters would want to remember he was offered a fight against David Pearce a Welsh professional heavyweight boxer (who retired with a 19-4-1 record) and admitted he was afraid to fight him.

He was a tough bouncer up against smaller usually drunk opponents, anyone who thinks McLean could have beaten Mike Tyson is away with the birds.

Criminals should be glamorized and glorified if they have an amiable personality, their victims were probably ugly and unpopular anyway.

I read somewhere he died recently, suicide apparently and he made a long video discussing his decision.

Decent bareknuckle boxer but would be destroyed by tyson or any pro boxer. He had good hands but not the required movement to go toe to toe with a proper boxer.

I never liked how they glamorised him,or his ilk, they were thugs and many people suffered because of them.

He was a proper hard man but to think he would beat a Tyson or Lewis is laughable not a hope in hell ,

Boxing as a professional sport is complete different Animal ,He'd find it hard to land a punch on pros of Tyson & Lewis due to levels of footwork alone

His supporters wouldn't be the most rational or well thought out intellects of our time now would they? He wouldn't beat any trained professional boxer never mind the top heavyweights in history. Doubt he'd even land a lucky punch to be honest.

He would be a YouTuber boxer these days.

His book The Guvnor is a great read though. There’s also a Netflix biography movie about him which had Michael Bisping playing Roy “Pretty Boy “ Shaw but I didn’t think it was very good. The actor playing McLean kept making stupid faces throughout the movie. I’ve seen some of his fights on YouTube also. It’s mainly him battering some big overweight slobs, very little in the way of boxing skills or technique in any of those unlicensed fights. With proper professional boxing training however I’d say he would have been a killer in the ring.
